Microplastics! They're in everything, from our bodies to the ocean.
And apparently they're even found in sediment layers that date back as early as the first half of the 1700s, showing microplastics' pernicious ability to infiltrate even environments untouched by modern humans.
A team of European researchers made this alarming discovery after studying the sediment layers at three lakes in Latvia, as detailed in a study published in the journal Science Advances.
Scientists have long used layers of ash or ice to study past events on Earth, leading to the question of whether microplastics can serve as a reliable chronological marker for the Anthropocene.
Clearly not, according to this new research, which found microplastics in every layer of sediment they dredged up, including one from 1733.

Which would mean naturally-occuring fires could have been producing those polymers all along.
Don’t rule out alien (out of this world) sources.
And / or maybe the dating based on sediment layers is not reliable.
Aliens. What do you think they were doing when they were making pyramids?
I think you’re on the right track.
One thing is certain, the “experts” and “scientists” should all be presumed to be liars and scam artists until proven not to be beyond a shadow of a doubt.
It wasn’t that way 50 years ago but it absolutely is now.
not naturally occurring but maybe leftovers from the 3rd age of human existence?
Aliens!
It has to be, polluting the earth millennia ago.....
This is a poorly written article. Either its saying that Microplastics from modern times are corrupting ancient sediments through seepage or it is saying these microplastics were produced in the 18th century.
Aliens! It’s proof of aliens!
If they are not “modern” then they should be found in every layer and much older layers than the 1700’s.
Maybe they are and no one looked...or maybe they are just natural polymers as others have suggested.
Hitting on women?
Ancient aliens polluted the planet.
How dare they?
;-)

Could be the stuff that creates the endless supply of in ground oil.
What does this say about the so called pristine value of these cores? If microplastics can infiltrate than what else is doing so?
