Hundreds of fast-food workers met in Los Angeles on Friday to kick off the launch of the California Fast Food Workers Union, a statewide union aimed at organizing cooks and cashiers at fast-food companies across the state.
The new union comes in the wake of a victory at the end of 2023 to boost pay for California’s more than 500,000-strong fast-food workforce to $20 an hour.

In California, over 80% of fast-food workers are people of color and two-thirds are women. In recent years, workers at fast-food chains throughout the state have held strikes in response to poor workplace conditions including excessive heat exposure in the workplace, sexual harassment and retaliation against workers, child labor violations, and wage theft.
“I’m very proud to say that we’re going to have a union. This is like a dream come true for me to be able to say this,” said Angelica Hernandez, who has worked at McDonald’s for 19 years in Los Angeles, California. “McDonald’s and other brands like Carl’s Jr, Chipotle – they have to listen to us. They’ve been making millions and millions of dollars in profits, and they want to keep their employees working at minimum wage.”

..... Now that the Fast Food Workers have basically priced themselves out of a job ..... The first order of the Union will be to minimize or even halt the cost saving Automation intended to replace the fast-food workers jobs which will then, in turn, force the employers to further replace the workers with more automated machines.
.
Employers don’t need to listen to you for longer than it takes to automate your job.
For middle class white teens, these jobs were for pocket money while still in school, not a career.
It’s also why college graduates, who never worked those summer jobs are so ill-prepared for their first jobs in the real world.
Angelica Hernandez, who has worked at McDonald’s for 19 years???
I worked at McD while I was in college and then I got a real job where I didn’t smell like the food I was making that shift....
BTW, Tootz. You are going to price fast food off the menu for most of us and robots will replace your jobs
Win win...
Travelers on long road trips with kids pay the price. Lots of sports teams stop the bus there after road games headed home. I don’t know why anyone else would.
Those food ordering kiosks are ready to take over your jobs.
Some years ago, one of my kids got a McD job. Most co workers were black, unfriendly, and there because they weren’t smart enough to get anything better.
My kid didn’t last long in that environment.
I was one of ‘em. Almost all of my friends were. We managed to work our part-time jobs while maintaining our school and extracurricular activity schedules. Some of us even had lucrative baby-sitting gigs as well.
They’ve destroyed everything else.
The only place they have left is fast food
Of course, they’ve unionized government and are totally safe there.
I always thought there should be a lower minimum wage for folks under 18 to encourage companies to hire teenage workers.
What good little future democrats.
There’s a store near me that hired an Arab manager about six months ago. I visited it last week. Besides the Arab manager, there were four employees in the store. Three out of the four employees were Arab.
I was a bit surprised by that, given that I live in an old mill town and not in Saudi Arabia.
Anyway, my question: When are they going to get around to firing that lone white guy?
When I was in High School, only losers didn’t have jobs.

Governor Gavin Newsom and the state’s legislative Democrats just gave a whopper of a gift to the SEIU labor union – Gov. Gavin Newsom just signed Assembly Bill 257 by Assemblyman Chris Holden (D-Los Angeles), to unionize the state’s 556,000 fast-food workers fast food workers.
To gin up the SEIU’s latest union-member recruitment, fast food workers have been protesting wages, hours and safety at the State Capitol.
California is about to become the first state in the country to unionize fast food employees by expanding state government to create a new Fast Food Council within the Department of Industrial Relations to set minimum health, safety and employment standards across the California fast food industry – even though every business in California operates under health, safety and employment standards set by state and local laws.
The state effectively making the fast food workers to be state employees.
They should definitely strike for higher pay right away. $100 an hour ought to do it. Heck, $200. It’s the land of social experiments, after all. This one ought to be hilarious.
Bought a Wendy’s cheeseburger and fries the other night. Paid about $9.50 for it. Yikes! Thanks, JoeJoe.
This appears to be the way to raise salaries to encourage employers to hire illegal aliens under the table.
There will be a lot more minorities and women unemployed due to this.
