Progressives spent last year torturing home cooks by threatening gas stoves and dishwashers in pursuit of energy efficiency. Now the climate brigade is going after drivers. A new bill in Washington state would give regulators the ability to ban tires that create a drag on fuel efficiency.
The proposal would give the state Department of Commerce authority to prevent the sale of replacement tires that the state says have too much “rolling resistance,” which decreases the fuel efficiency of the vehicles. Rolling resistance depends largely on the weight and depth of a tire tread, the grippy thick part that keeps you from sliding off the road in a storm.
Washington state isn’t Arizona, and even Seattle progressives need their Outbacks to get safely to the Cascades. The deeper the tread, the stronger and heavier the tire is. This means the car gets fewer miles per gallon, but it also means drivers will have a better grip on the road. The bill would cover all replacement tires for cars and light trucks up to 10,000 pounds.
The proposed legislation says the new standards “may not adversely affect tire safety or tire longevity as demonstrated by the independent testing of wet grip or traction.” That’s a good caveat, but if the new standards aren’t going to reduce safety and grippiness, why does the next section create an exemption for snow tires? The biggest difference between snow tires and regular tires is the depth and pattern of the tread.
The bill says adopting the new standards “could result in an approximate cumulative reduction of 600,000,000 gallons of gasoline and 1,500 gigawatt hours of electricity” between 2026 to 2035.

Let ask what “Climate Change” is really about?
It is about diversion of human consumption to serve the interests of technology?
Are the machines taking over?
Climate Change is their excuse for more tyranny.
Low rolling resistence tire are great if you can find them in the size you need.
We’re living in an Ayn Rand novel.
“Climate Change is their excuse for more tyranny.”
Yup. They all got together and said,
“We need more money and power! What can we do to scare the crap out of people, especially kids, and get free money forever? It has to be something that can’t be proved wrong.”
“I know, let’s tax the air!!!”
“It is about diversion of human consumption to serve the interests of technology?”
It is about the diversion of money and power.
It’s all an economic arguement. The elites want a piece of the entire economy and they want everything bought to be bought from them.
For example, they get plastic straws banned and get paper straws to replace them. Lo and behold, it just so happens that some billionaire owns the paper straw factory. They are tying everything to carbon, so they can replace a bunch of stuff with stuff that their factories produce.
I'd say it's about totalitarian control over every aspect of our lives.
Did she call it or what?
anything else they do creates a significant resistence
keep looking out for “legislative opportunity”...it means violating a minority with impunity to score brownie points with a wealthy cash source
$$$$ is the endgame there is no doubt.
What I find is that when “Climate Change” is discussed globally Xi and Putin aren’t challenging that. They go along with it.
John Kerry sat down in Moscow and Beijing with his counterparts from Russia and China.
All figuring out to fornicate the little people of the world and get all the $$$$ I guess.
I haven’t made up my list of banned items in my lifetime yet, but I guess I’ll be adding decent tires to it.
The intent here, of course, is to drive up the cost of tires for gasoline vehicles to match that of EVs (which cost about 3 times gasoline vehicle prices as EV owners are now learning the hard way. The reason for the tires on EVs is that they need the very slightly lower rolling resistance to notch up their range, while small fractions of MPGs are not so critical for gasoline cars.
A good investment now might be opening up some tire stores in Idaho as I doubt Washington will be able to prevent people from driving to a place to replace their tires that still has ‘tire freedom’.
The fascist Left will not stop until they control everything. Eventually:
“You cannot buy those socks! They are not approved!”
“You cannot use an electric shaver! It is forbidden!”
Lucky for them that phony Climate Change came along. It makes things so much easier. All they’ve got to do now is be patient, and not overplay their hand. Just take small steps.
You can have my Perellis when you peel them from my hot, burning Ducati!
Did the mention the $300 million in lost gas tax revenues to the state at their.49 a gal state tax?
