Ending months of negotiations, the US government on Friday approved a $23 billion deal to sell F-16 warplanes to Turkey, after Ankara ratified Sweden's NATO membership, the State Department said.

As required by US law, the State Department notified Congress of the agreement, as well as a separate $8.6 billion sale of 40 F-35s to Greece.

Turkey will get 40 new F-16s and upgrades to 79 of the jets in its existing fleet, the State Department said in a news release.

The United States did not green light the transaction until Turkey's instruments of ratification of Sweden's membership had arrived in Washington, a US official said, highlighting the highly sensitive nature of the negotiations.

Boy, that Turkey, what an anchor for NATO. In five years Turkey will have swapped NATO membership for BRIChinaS.

Wisdom would dictate that the USA has left a few back-doors in the software so we can disable the planes when the time comes.

Turkey was a secular nation when it was admitted to NATO. Now its’ dictator talks about a universal islamic caliphate, (which he of course would be the head of).

If you had a neighbor who was yelling Olaf Hackbar and declared Geehawd from the roof, would it be sane to give him your weapons because the HOA said so?

We live in a bizarre world. God help us.

I hope that the people in the West aren’t counting on NATO to save them.

.....”..Turkey will get 40 new F-16s and upgrades to 79 of the jets in its existing fleet, the State Department said in a news release.”

Northrup Grumman is still cranking out F-16 “Fighting Falcon” jets but our own Air Force won’t buy them....by this time they are probably the latest Block 70s or something; very potent but our own Air Force does not want to buy any “legacy aircraft” so we keep pouring money into that dog, the F-35...

NATO has saved and preserved all of Europe from a bloody Soviet/Russian invasion since the 4th of April 1949. Period.
Thus, it not not only works well. It’s a historical and spectacular success story.

No wonder that NATO is now expanding like never before.

I am thinking that that is NATO of the past - like before East Germany joined.

I’ve only known Middle Easterners who were in America as students, neighbors, business associates and fellow employees. That’s probably not a representative sample as they all spoke English, and most had been here a long time. But every chance I got I learned their views. The Jihadists are mostly the lower classes. In my experience they live in a world of literal and unteachable ignorance. They believe in magic...saying something makes it true or real. This is every Palestinian I met with one exception. This is the student radicals who brought the Ayatollah to power. The upper-class Turks and Iranians I met, and class means educated, sophisticated but not necessarily wealthy, were very much like the average American.

President Erdogan of Turkey once said something to the effect, “Freedom is a bus you ride to the destination and then get off.” Meaning he wants to be president for life, and he has wiped out the opposition so he can pull it off. His views on religion are like any politician who says whatever he thinks will play well but he has no personal connection with religion. Think the Clintons but with fifty percent less sleaze. He wants to make Turkey a regional hegemon, but he has not been hyper aggressive about it. Evidence is he won’t invade Greece which he could have done at any point. Any time he needs support from the street he sounds religious and moves into Syria and makes a lot of noise. Think of Bill Clinton who bombed an aspirin factory anytime the news was about to release anything embarrassing.

There are two ways to keep the lid on the Middle East without using American muscle. Put Iran in charge, the Obama solution and put Turkey in charge, the solution for rationalists. Are they the perfect solution? No, but neither is us policing the area for the rest of eternity.

“Boy, that Turkey, what an anchor for NATO. In five years Turkey will have swapped NATO membership for BRIChinaS.”

That’s the truth, but the grifters are more interested in the money they can get today. They always worry about consequences later, as they can make money on the consequences others will be suffering for them. Sweet deal: All upside, very little downside.

War is profitable but if they want to see real carnage they can just keep sending weapons to Turkey and Arabia and Hezballah/Lebanon and PLO/Abbas/Fatah gangsters.

serious bloodletting is inevitable so long as USA and allies continue supporting such aggressive, dangerous, and evil “people”

Turkey used to have a decent government and then they wound up with this IslamoNazi regime... the weapons should have ended immediately
