It was love at first sight when Neil Semel saw the electric Mercedes EQS 450+ at a Pompano Beach dealership. The sedan was the perfect sleek black color his wife wanted, had only 2,200 miles and they both liked the idea of getting away from gasoline.
“I’ve always driven combustion engines and I thought it was time to try to save the planet,” Semel said.
But after less than 5,000 miles of driving around his Boca Raton neighborhood, Semel was shocked to find some essential — and very expensive — parts were already wearing out. The tires.
“If somebody looked at me and said, Mr. Semel, you are going to love this car but in about 7,000 miles you will have to pay 1,400 or 1,500 dollars to replace the tires, I wouldn’t have bought the car,” Semel said.
For many drivers of EVs in Florida — the nation’s second largest market for electrical vehicles — premature tire wear has become an unexpected black mark on vehicles promoted as a green climate-friendly option to gas-gulping cars.
At EV Garage Miami, a Sweetwater repair shop that services 90 percent electric vehicles, lead technician Jonathan Sanchez said tires are the most frequent thing customers come in about — no matter what model or make of EV they’re driving. Tire mileage can vary widely of course, but he said he frequently changes EV tires at just 8,000 to 10,000 miles — a fourth or even fifth of typical tire wear on a gas-burning car.

I wonder if the car shipped with summer performance tires. My car came with summer performance tires and I drove about 10K miles before needing new tires. I switched to all season tires and have driven 45K miles on each of the last two sets.
On your tire's sidewall is a treadwear rating and load index.
The treadwear on my Mazda is 280.
This is a rating of the tread's durability, as tested against an industry standard. The reference number is 100, so a tire with a treadwear rating of 200 has a predicted tread life that's twice as long as the industry standard, while a rating of 80 means a predicted tread life that's only 80 percent as long as the industry standard.

Yea, but they can't be fixed fast enough. The constant freezing then thawing then freezing destroys our roads faster than they can be replaced. That and the overweight semis on the roads.......
As a side note, she now wants to give free community college to all high school grads.....
The base 2WD Tesla Model 3 is 3600 pounds. That’s the same as an optioned out Honda Accord.
Kid has the Tesla SUV and gets about 7500 miles out of a set of expensive Michelin tires. Been that way for six years she has had it and it seems to be the low center of gravity coupled with the weight. In all season they run about 350 per tire.
I just buy top of the line Michlinns and call it a day. My leased car has shallow looking treads that look like they could be called summer wear.
I live in central Illinois. Many roads were crap in the metro area before the cold spell. It is now much worse after the bad weather for the last month. The maintenance crews are putting a bandaid on roadways that should have been resurfaced years ago.
She was stupid enough to promise. Hold her to it.

I drive a 1976 1 ton 4 speed dually truck that weighs about 6700#-—DEAD EMPTY.
I tow a 4 horse trailer that weighs 4420# DEAD EMPTY.
I get better tire mileage than that-—as many as 44,000 miles on Coopers-—before they sold out to someone else. NOW-—Lucky to get 20,000.
These are Load range D tires—80# inflation each.
THE 2 most difficult fires to put out are tire piles & HAY stacks
Wait until all the “GREENIES” discover that the tires they need are made from FOSSIL FUELS !!!!
MY 1 TON 4 speed dually truck weighs 6700# dead empty & I have hauled horse trailers all over the western half of the USA.
OVER 250,000 miles on the dually—chassis now has 348,000 miles.
2 ORIGINAL items needed to be replaced this past fall -—in a 48 year old vehicle.
Another part-—master fuel switch UNDER truck bed was replaced in August 2021-—46 year old part.
FIND ME ANYTHING sold today that will have original parts for over 48 YEARS.
THEY ARE NOW.
Same with refrigerators. We’ve had one since the 1980s. Did replace the compressor but aside from that the thing is a tank.
Fridges now are made to last 3-5 years. That’s it. Major appliance and that’s what you get — crap made in China designed to be replaced.
