DeSantis threatens to use ‘veto pen’ if Florida lawmakers pass measure to use taxpayer money for Trump’s legal bills

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis let it be known Monday that he won’t support legislation in the Sunshine State that would put taxpayers on the hook for former President Donald Trump’s legal bills.

In response to a Politico report noting that “some Florida Republicans” are backing a measure that could grant as much as $5 million to the 77-year-old GOP presidential primary front-runner, DeSantis tweeted: “But not the Florida Republican who wields the veto pen…”

The proposal, filed by state Sen. Ileana Garcia (R-Miami), would set aside state funds for legal fees incurred as a result of criminal charges brought by a “US public entity” on “qualified persons” who have been “subject to political discrimination.”

Trump isn’t named in the bill text, but to qualify for the money, individuals must meet “presidential eligibility requirements” and be Florida residents – both criteria that Trump meets.

You don’t like him. So what?

The tax payers of Florida should not be responsible for Trumps legal bills.

The citizens of Florida may think it’s a good use of their money

Then put it up for a referendum which I can all but guarantee will go down in flame.

Perhaps Trump should keep his salary this time to pay legal fees that the GOPe/dems caused. And let everyone know REAL LOUD!

Clearly the desantis supporters are as two faced as the left is....

It’s not okay to spend Florida money to defend a Florida resident against lawfare...

But it’s okay to spend at least $19 million to fly 700 people, many non Floridians, to the U.S. from Israel, and spend undisclosed amounts to send weapons and body armor, not requested by the Israeli government, on separate cargo planes to unknown groups there, on the Florida taxpayer’s dimes for p.r. purposes

And it’s okay for desanctus to use $92 million to reward and enrich a donor with increased highway access...

Because none of them have said anything the corrupt things desantis has done, that were pointed out.

Everything has to be about being so clever and superior. It isn’t an error and he isn’t a team player. It is why the Desanctimonious moniker was so spot on.

None of what DeSantis did for paying for evacuations should be on the State’s dime.

Neither should the legal bills of a private citizen, be it you, me or President Trump, unless of course a Public Defender is used in which case the state is obligated to pay that cost.

What principle are you referring to? In this case, we have taxpayer money being used by a corrupt government to pay for the political prosecution of the main political rival of the current President. Is that principled? Should the defendant not have the right to use taxpayer funding to fight a political prosecution that is using taxpayer funding? This is how our corrupt government works, it tries to destroy people financially by bringing the full weight of the corrupt government against those it doesn’t like, and is often successful because the individuals cannot afford it. Look at Flynn and others the DOJ has gone after. I post this only as another way of looking at it. Personally, I disagree with taxpayer funds being used this way, but there must be some way people can protect themselves from this corrupt government. I also disagree with taxpayer funds being used to defend bureaucrats who are knowingly and willingly breaking the law while performaing their duties. Yet, that is happening all the time. I believe several of the corrupt FBI Russia collusion hoax group were defended using taxpayer funding.

If Trump were being prosecuted by the state, the state paying his legal fees to defend a malicious prosecution would make some sense, especially if it required the payment to be made after a dismissal.

However, the FL prosecution is orchestrated by the feds and if anyone should be on the hook it’s the federal government, not the state government and its taxpayers, most of whom, did not vote for Biden or this prosecution.

Well, we know why you hold the opinion you do

The MAGAholes spent the last several months telling us “DeSimps” they don’t need our votes. I don’t want to make a liar out of them.

Ron himself is in major danger of serious legal bills for blatant Federal Election law violations with his super stupid SuperPac/campaign mess.

Karma has no mercy.

So Desantis is the Florida DOT? He personally reviews and approves every road and interchange planned by the DOT? So then you would also hold Trump personally responsible for everything every department in his administration did, every piece of pork spending that occurred between 2017-2020?

If you have evidence that Desantis personally directed this interchange to be built, particularly if it was against the recommendation of the DOT, then produce it. Otherwise, you are really reaching.

Run and hide. You do that well. Answer the question coward.

Shouldn't you answer his question first? And by not doing so, aren't you being a coward as well?

It is not the state of Florida prosecuting Trump - so why should the citizens of Florida be taxed to cover Trump's legal expenses? Your argument MIGHT have some smidgen of reasonability if Florida was the cause of his legal expenses in the first place.

Behind Liberal Lines made the comment, but there isn’t a clear way to quote things from other threads.

I guess I should have attributed it more clearly

It wasn't asked to me. Mine was asked to the OP. Notice how spot on my suggestion was that the OP would run and hide?
