Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis let it be known Monday that he won’t support legislation in the Sunshine State that would put taxpayers on the hook for former President Donald Trump’s legal bills.
In response to a Politico report noting that “some Florida Republicans” are backing a measure that could grant as much as $5 million to the 77-year-old GOP presidential primary front-runner, DeSantis tweeted: “But not the Florida Republican who wields the veto pen…”
The proposal, filed by state Sen. Ileana Garcia (R-Miami), would set aside state funds for legal fees incurred as a result of criminal charges brought by a “US public entity” on “qualified persons” who have been “subject to political discrimination.”
Trump isn’t named in the bill text, but to qualify for the money, individuals must meet “presidential eligibility requirements” and be Florida residents – both criteria that Trump meets.

I know. Maybe all states should pay his legal bills.
Sour grapes Ron is going to be like Chris Christie it looks like.
I guess the Florida job doesn’t mean much to him now.
DeTankis is all about himself.
“DeTankis is all about himself.”
I for one are sick and tired of hearing about “Desantis” and I live in FL and love him as a Gov but running for 2024 was one big mistake.
I wouldn’t try to make hay over this - he’s right - and he already endorsed President Trump...this is just cap trying to divide us and for some, it’s working....
BTTT
Oh please. Having state taxpayers fund legal fees for a candidate is absurd.
The powers that be backed DeSantis in order to split The Trump vote. His backers are still busy trying to drive that wedge. It’s what The GOPe always does. The GOPe wanted(wants) Nikki Haley. Don’t fall for it. Even if it comes from DeSantis himself. DeSantis endorsed Trump. Unite around Trump.
Not necessarily
The citizens of Florida may think it’s a good use of their money. Better than most
How about the Floridian Jan 6 prisoners?
Meanwhile we paid him to be governor while he ran for president instead.
What a load of crap. Pure unadulterated super bravado, self esteem inducing, bull shit
Coming from you, bert, that’s a compliment since you always take the opposite side of things.
Liberals believe they know better than us mere citizens where, when and how much to direct your hard-earned money for their pet projects. Passing a bill to cover DJT's legal bills today will be the same tax used to pay for Biden's legal bills tomorrow. See how this works?
You never fail to impress with your superior intellect bert. Thanks for the morning chuckle!
Good.
“Some things are about principles not personalities.”
What is principle about the political persecutions of Trump? You either have no principles or have TDS. There should be a political solution to a blatant political witch hunt.
Grow up. If you weren’t so childish, you’d merely be annoying. I’ve been here almost 14 years. And I live under the “thumb” of Phil Murphy, not Kathy Hochul, het it right.
NY should be responsible for bankrolling Letitia. By her own admission she ran for her position based on personal political feelings ignoring the law.
Trump didn’t get public about it but the rep who proposed it sure did.
Besides it’s a waste of taxpayer money so the governor has every right to respond to this ridiculous proposition.
I don’t like Ron as a person at all . He is a snake and conniver. But he is Governor there for now. He probably should be wise enough (which he is not ) to not count on MAGA supporters to vote for him if he runs in 2028.
I am done with him.
