Harvard president’s resignation highlights new conservative weapon against colleges: plagiarism

WASHINGTON (AP) — The downfall of Harvard’s president has elevated the threat of unearthing plagiarism, a cardinal sin in academia, as a possible new weapon in conservative attacks on higher education.

Claudine Gay’s resignation Tuesday followed weeks of mounting accusations that she lifted language from other scholars in her doctoral dissertation and journal articles. The allegations surfaced amid backlash over her congressional testimony about antisemitism on campus.

The plagiarism allegations came not from her academic peers but her political foes, led by conservatives who sought to oust Gay and put her career under intense scrutiny in hopes of finding a fatal flaw. Her detractors charged that Gay — who has a Ph.D. in government, was a professor at Harvard and Stanford and headed Harvard’s largest division before being promoted — got the top job in large part because she is a Black woman.

He was a plagiarist before plagiarism was cool.

The worst part is to realize how the ivy league schools have festered in our government. We need to be shaming the ivy league grads till they come clean and start behaving like adults. Ex-pres Gay is the beginning. The walls are closing in.

As usual, the AP has it totally backwards. The issue is not that conservatives are nit-picking resume’s, it’s that conservatives are exposing affirmative action hiring. Gay was simply an incompetent hire! Her razor thin academic credentials simply didn’t pass the slightest scrutiny. The fault is not with conservatives for conducting the scrutiny, it’s with Harvard for failing to look when hiring her.

Living in flyover country, I’ve never heard of Gay before her testimony to Congress. Maybe she ruffled some east coast feathers and if she did it wasn’t enough to make national news.

Oh dear. And with AI plagiarism detectors becoming more widespread, there will be a lot more of this.

Harvard says it has an honor code... https://honor.fas.harvard.edu/honor-code

Note to Harvard: Talk is cheap.

When they sift through the mountain of debris Gay left behind, Harvard’s honor will be buried there.

They’ll struggle to get that back the next 100 years, or so.

Harvard lost its honor a long time ago.

Harvard doesn't care.

They paid her to go away.

Nuff said.

“This may be the most biased news report I ever read.”

Yes, but it was also one of the most satisfying.

“he has seriously damaged Harvard brand. That she is still there albeit in a lower position will continue to damage the schools battered reputation.”

Not at all. She is a hard core lefty. That is exactly the brand Harvard is looking for. They know exactly what they’re doing.

This article says a tweeter ran her resignation letter through plagiarism check, and it failed. Another article said it was probably because her letter’s been posted everywhere. Huh?:

LOL…the left unearths the fact that somebody 500 years ago once used a wrong pronoun to destroy that long-dead person and discredit all his lifelong achievements.

Now they think unearthing REAL serious educational and professional CHEATING just a few years ago is a new “conservative weapon.” Give me a break.

There’s no hypocrisy like liberal hypocrisy.

1) Plagiarism has long been a cardinal sin in Academia. It has brought down plenty of people.

2) How is this a “Conservative weapon”? Anybody else in her position who had been a serial plagiarizer would have been ousted as well. So there was nothing “Conservative” about her ouster.

3) a University President’s job is to a large extent, fundraising for the University. Her disastrous congressional testimony revealing a tolerance for antisemitism at Harvard at the very highest levels effectively torpedoed her ability to fundraise - as numerous public statements from prominent Harvard alums and donors as well as the very public resignations of multiple board members in disgust make quite clear.

I don’t know if Leftists plagiarize more. What I do know is thanks to Leftists’ policy of “repressive tolerance”, they ruthlessly punish those on the Right who plagiarize while giving a complete free pass to those on the Left who do so. Ergo there are plenty of Leftist Plagiarists in high positions while those on the Right were eliminated from even being in consideration if they committed plagiary and they were eliminated a long time ago.

In September 1987, Biden announced he was dropping out of the presidential race. The NYT observed: “His whole life might have changed if he had said two words on the debate stage: ‘Like Kinnock …’

Biden's aggressive body language suggests he thinks
it was somebody else's fault he plagiarized Kinnock.

The way the headline is written it seems to imply that conservatives are the ones committing plagiarism.

I think he wasn’t officially disqualified, but when the issue came up it seemed so bad that it put an end to one of his campaigns for POTUS. At least that’s how I remember it.

Could you imagine the slates of candidates if every Democrat were disqualified for lying or cheating?
