The American Revolution was a different war than that often depicted in poetry and Hollywood movies. It was ugly and brutal, and militias were often pitted against one another in even the smallest towns.

The Battle of Cedar Bridge is fought
On this day in history, December 27, 1782, the Battle of Cedar Bridge is fought near Manahawkin, New Jersey. One of the last skirmishes of the Revolutionary War, the Battle of Cedar Bridge was a fight between Loyalist holdouts and New Jersey militia, illustrating the civil war nature of the American Revolution.
During the Revolution, Royal Governor William Franklin, son of Benjamin Franklin, authorized Loyalist supporters to form militia groups to fight against the “patriot” rebels. Numerous “Boards of Associated Loyalists” sprung up around New Jersey, including one in the New Jersey pinelands which had Captain John Bacon as one of its members.
Over the course of several years during the war, Bacon earned quite a notorious reputation for making raids on the homes and businesses of patriots throughout southern and eastern New Jersey. In one particularly gruesome act, Bacon and his followers, who were known as the “Pine Robbers” or the “Refugees,” killed 30 crewmembers of the patriot privateer, Alligator, as they slept on Long Beach near their ship. The event caused an all-out manhunt as the militia tried to capture Bacon and bring him to justice. The massacre is called the “Barnegat Light Massacre” or the “Massacre of Long Beach.”
As the end of the war approached, Loyalists began to dwindle in number as many fled to Nova Scotia or Canada. Pockets of Loyalist resistance began to shrink, especially in the cities and some of those that remained set up enclaves in the wilderness, hence the name, the “Refugees.” They were truly like refugees in a foreign land. Bacon’s group took on this nature of a wilderness resistance group. Homes were pillaged. Businesses were robbed. Travelers were accosted on the road.
In December, 1782, two militia groups were out in masse hunting for Bacon and his band. Captain Edward Thomas of Mansfield and Captain Richard Shreve of Burlington County were heading the search mission when they heard that Bacon was near Cedar Creek, in present day Ocean County near the town of Barnegat.
Bacon’s men had stopped at the Cedar Bridge Tavern for some food. When he heard the militia was near, he knew he didn’t have time to escape, so he set up a barricade across the Cedar Bridge. As soon as the militia arrived, a firefight broke out. Bacon’s men lasted for quite a while, but the militia soon began to get the upper hand. Just when it seemed the militia would overtake the “Refugees,” shots rang out from another direction from a bunch of local Loyalists who arrived to help Bacon. In the confusion, Bacon escaped, although he was injured in the fight. Several of these locals were later hanged for helping Bacon.
Four months later, in April of 1783, Bacon was captured and killed at another tavern near Tuckerton, New Jersey by some of Captain Shreve’s men. He was so hated that his body was paraded through town and across the countryside and finally buried in an unmarked grave in Arneytown.
The Battle of Cedar Bridge, or the Skirmish of Cedar Bridge, was one of the very last engagements of the Revolutionary War. Word of a signed preliminary peace treaty with Great Britain arrived in the United States shortly after the skirmish and a ceasefire was declared by Congress in the same month that John Bacon was killed.

Hi,CB!
I brought back enough BACON for everyone!

Maine voters didn’t elect Secretary of State @ShennaBellows
.
The Democrat-controlled Maine legislature picked her.
She’s not a lawyer.
Yet she issued a legal ruling Trump (somehow) incited an (unarmed) “insurrection” on January 6th.
And she legally decreed Trump is (somehow) disqualified under a provision of the 14th Amendment enacted after the Civil War to chase out of office Confederates who fought the Union.
She legally determined she—a partisan state election official— (somehow) has the power to unilaterally disqualify a presidential candidate.
So hundreds of thousands of Maine voters don’t get to decide their presidential nominee.
This arrogant, rabid nutjob should get sent to a padded cell.

Since it is taller than The Statue Of Liberty, I would assume it is lit up at night.
More stuff for you to explore:
https://www.countryinnmaine.com/penobscot-narrows-bridge-observatory/
It’s an amazing structure!
Hope you enjoy it!
When I brought some Texas Freepers up here, the observation towers were not ready! Oh well! It was/is a VERT impressive bridge!
If you ever go cruising around, be sure to have lunch at a place called “Zippys.”
Really great food!
CAD = cold agglutun disease. It is a rare hemolytic autoimmune disease where at certain temperatures or below your body begins destroying your own red blood cells. In my case, the agglutination begins around 65oF. Our primary defense is to stay out of cooler climates.
4! Although 5 & 6 are good, too.
5 & 6 all day long.
I’m for 2 & 4.
Love you guys!
If you get a rooster like Hank, keep your cat/ away or penned up!
A rooster like Hank was not afraid of the meter reader OR his truck! I don’t think the cat would win that fight.
Their spurs are very sharp, and they would probably disembowel a cat.
When one of my friend here asked me where I got Hank, I told him I found him on the side of the road, which was true.
He said Hank might have been being raised as a fighting cock.
He thought maybe a cock fighting ring got wind of a raid, and just tossed out all the birds.
I have no idea if that was true or not, but that SOB (my rooster) was so aggressive I tended to believe him.
If you look at Rooster called Modern Game Fowl” it’s a carbon copy of Hank.
Disclaimer: I do NOT condone cock fighting, it is a cruel sport! I brought him home as he was starving, and I felt sorry for him.
He was NEVER used in that manner!
Check out these “Silkie chickens,”
They are small, and adorable!
Their eggs are small, however!
They are delightful, and some have “little Hats” on their
heads. I had one that looked like Phyllis Diller and those crazy hats she used to wear. These little chickens are a delight to raise and impossibly cute!
Crossed the old Waldo-Hancock bridge on many occasions when I was younger, but moved south before the new bridge was built.
I like #1 for when I want to wrap scallops and broil them. #2 is perfect for adding the eggs and continue frying, #3 will work well for laying across the top of a roast, #4 is perfect for and B&T sandwich, #5 is just about right for sitting and crunching, and #6 is exactly what I like to crumble into potato salad.
So, all of the above!
Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!
Jem, you are a delightful lady. I’m so sorry that you suffer with CAD, but in spite of that, you always have something helpful and interesting to enrich our little group. I always love reading your posts, and following your little adventures and comings and goings has been so enjoyable for me....I suspect that everyone feels the same.
God bless you and keep you and don’t ever think you’re not a delightful and colorful addition to this world!
Cutest little birds I ever did see! I’ll have one of each.
I am FURIOUS with her!
She has made Maine a laughing stock!
Like most liberals, she is clueless!
*fuming*
