American taxpayers footed the bill for at least $1.8 trillion in federal and state health care expenditures in 2022 — about 41% of the nearly $4.5 trillion in both public and private health care spending the U.S. recorded last year, according to the annual report released last week by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
On top of that $1.8 trillion, third-party programs, which are often government-funded, and public health programs accounted for another $600 billion in spending.
This means the U.S. government spent more on health care last year than the governments of Germany, the U.K., Italy, Spain, Austria, and France combined spent to provide universal health care coverage to the whole of their population (335 million in total), which is comparable in size to the U.S. population of 331 million.
Between direct public spending and compulsory, tax-driven insurance programs, Germany spent about $380 billion in health care in 2022; France spent around $300 billion, and so did the U.K.; Italy, $147 billion; Spain, $105 billion; and Austria, $43 billion. The total, $1.2 trillion, is about two-thirds of what the U.S. government spent.

Well yeah. Universal health care doesn’t actually provide good health care
of course we do! medical malpractice suits defense costsmoney!
If only we had some sort of laws that made price fixing. colluding to fix prices , monopolizing,... We could call them Anti Trust Laws, kind of like the old fable called Sherman Clayton Anti trust law or the fictitious Robinson Patman anti trust law from old folk stories, hell we could put a lot of criminals away and stop the racketeering in the medical profession...
The waiting list is nice.
But….ObamaCare.
They spend less because they get less.
Hospital waiting list deaths double in five years

Man died after excessive wait for cancer treatment
UK: Numbers show huge spike in patient deaths while on NHS waitlist
They are intentionally trying to break the system to bring about Single-Payer. That’s what ObamaCare was all about.
Which is the point the pinheads encouraging this always cover up. No one likes such gov’mt care. It is sub-par. It will degrade with time, just like everything the gov’mt, any gov’mt, touches.
Gov’mt cannot do anything except support military.
And will be how they control everything you do.
Didn’t eat the right stuff? Have a gun in your house? Vote the wrong? Healthcare DENIED!
They’re not supposed to do anything but the military. Police and infrastructure. What else? Nothing
Everything else they screw up
Obama gave student loans to the government
Health care ? No. Medicare took over completely. Now what do we have?
Oba care? It’s called ACA. Affordable care act. Few benefits. Few MDs take it. So stupid
In Britain people wait 6 months for an MRI. And they wait 9 months to see a cancer specialist.
The system is collapsing.
Nationalization is inevitable. Time to discuss how it should be done.
I have come to the point where the “Medicare for all” proposal doesn’t look that bad. It would be a step better than Obama care.
Yep. $1100 a month “which includes the subsidy discount” is ridiculous for me and FH. With 2K deductible.
Aren’t we paying Big Pharm for the rest of the world’s meds?
Don't want to pay the ticket. Then don't get the care.
Or, better yet. Move to Canada or the UK. They speak our language, and you pay nothing. You also get practically nothing.
I'm happy to pay. Our medical system has kept me and my family alive.
I am no government fan. Not at all. Practically everything they do turns to crap.
I've been on Medicare for 15 years and used it beyond my wildest expectations due to a couple of serious illnesses.
It is the best program I've ever seen and used, and I know about alternatives. I pay for health insurance for our employees and have paid for myself my whole life until age 65.
The program is outstanding -- at least from a patient perspective.
But it is going to contribute greatly to the bankruptcy of this country.
Tell me exactly how you propose to pay for "Medicare for All" when you add 80% of our population to that program. If 20% is spiraling us toward bankruptcy, exactly what will 100% do? Inquiring minds want to know.
And despite this, we probably had more Covid deaths than those same six countries...
That’s why companies in places like France and Hungary offer health insurance.
In Hungary doctors often do the government work in the morning and private practice in the afternoon.
I had overseas health insurance and service was great.
The only place you are completely stuck with the government system is Canada, as far as I know.
