A 12 gauge slug is an incredibly devastating round as it packs a large amount of kinetic energy that leaves a rather big hole in its intended target. However, it conserves its energy extremely well and at close range (like during a home defense situation) it is likely that a slug would travel through a bad guy, punch through drywall, and potentially strike a family member or innocent bystander.
Unless you live in the country without any neighbors within 400 yards or more, slugs are not recommended for home defense. The danger of over penetration is simply too high to use a slug indoors.
Can’t miss with buckshot go for the legs first.
Needed is A Mag Fed .410
Say 20 rounds.
.
Giddy-Up!
Several conclusions emerge from the results in Figure 10:
Deformed #4 buckshot is not acceptable for self-defense at any range
If you're buying ordinary #4 buck, not the spendy specialty HD/SD loads that are plated or hardened, you might as well be shooting birdshot.
ok cool
I’ve decided not to use birdshot for home defense.
It can’t be counted on to penetrate deeply enough to incapacitate an intruder, especially if he’s wearing heavy clothing. You might say, “Shoot him in the face/throat.” Well, good luck with that.
The key thing is, you need to make the attacker incapable of assaulting you. You don’t shoot unless there’s no alternative and if you do shoot, it needs to be effective. I chose #1 or OO buckshot.
But what about overpenetration? In my situation I have no children living at home to be concerned with. As for neighbors, the buckshot would first have to penetrate my exterior wall, then go through the neighbor’s wall. Considering the resulting substantial loss of velocity and the spread of the shot charge over distance, a neighbor could possibly receive a shallow wound from a pellet or two. Sorry about that, neighbor.
For close in work I like #2 steel shot high velocity shells. It’s a crowd pleaser
Yes, but the question is the best for self defense. Unless they are taking potshots at you from 100 yards, it’s not self defense. Self defense when you have a shotgun will be within 10 yards. Even birdshot will do significant damage at close range. Buck shot will be devastating at that range. Plus the pattern will be large enough that a quick shot from the hip will probably strike the assailant with at least some of the shot.
Having said that, if you hit someone with even 9 shot at 30 feet, I believe that the bad guy will live, but the fight will be over and the bad guy will be disfigured for life.
Take a crayon and melt it.
Pour the bird shot into the melted crayon and put the mixture back into the cartridge.
Instant frangible slug (on the cheap)!
I saw a video where lithium batteries were loaded into a 12 ga cartridge and became a frangible slug as well
