Major California toy retailers without “gender-neutral” sections will be fined hundreds of dollars under Gov. Gavin Newsom’s pro-LGBTQ bill.
Assembly Bill No. 1084, signed by Newsom in 2021, will be enacted on January 1, 2024, and will require stores that sell “childcare items or toys” for children aged 12 years or younger to display a gender-neutral section — or be fined up to $500.
Stores will be required by law to have designated gender-neutral toys “regardless of whether they have been traditionally marketed for either girls or for boys,” the bill states.
The legislation will apply to retailers with 500 or more employees, and those who fail to comply will be “liable for a civil penalty not to exceed $250 for a first violation or $500 for a subsequent violation.”
The bill was originally introduced into the California Assembly by then-Assemblyman Evan Low (D-CA), who is now a representative in the U.S. Congress.
He celebrated Newsom signing the bill in a 2021 statement to the Associated Press, saying “We need to stop stigmatizing what’s acceptable for certain genders and just let kids be kids.”
“My hope is this bill encourages more businesses across California and the U.S. to avoid reinforcing harmful and outdated stereotypes,” Low said, adding that he was “incredibly grateful” for Newsom’s support on the bill.
When the assembly bill was first introduced, Lego released a statement saying that the company was working to make its products more inclusive for girls.

I saw the words “Gavin Newsom,” and reading it quickly, thought “face fines” said “FECES”
Designate the whole store as gender neutral.

Newsome can use civil rights, or even protecting the mental health of children, as legal justification.
And even if they had a case for overturning this law, retailers wouldn't bother. Cheaper to just create gender neutral sections than to hire expensive attorneys.
It’s been a while since I’ve been in a toy store (not that there are many toy stores anymore since Toys R Us and Kaybees went away), but I really don’t remember signs like “Boys Toys” or “Girls Toys.” It seems to be they just had the doll aisle, the games aisle, the stuffed animal aisle, infants toy aisle, etc.
People just figured it out for themselves based on what type of toy they were looking for.
Dems as other despots always start with “suggestions” and then move to laws and punishments.
As “good idea to recycle” then “your recycling contents will be monitored” and fines and fees. And don’t leave a computer in the trash, get permission after paying a city office for allowing the disposal.
I remember the first time I saw a defiant Karen looking from side to side and then unloading her SUV’s several bags of garbage into the Whole Food dumpster and driving away. Fees for trash pickup at home.

OMG. I had Legos. I’m a chick. I had fun with Legos. I never thought they dissed girls. I built buildings. I played with both Barbies and Legos. I had Lincoln Logs too. And Holly HObbie stuff. I played with the boy next door’s Star Wars stuff and he had tea with me using my play kitchen and tea set.
What the feaking hell???!!!

It seems like a crazy law, but it also seems like a law that would be very easy to comply with. Just don’t designate any particular toys that are appropriate for a particular sex.
Just have a toy aisle for monster trucks, one for dolls, etc without any designation of which sex would prefer to play with them.

Exactly. I’ve never seen a Boys or Girls section in toy stores/departments. There are usually sections for infant toys, toddler toys, dolls, vehicles, various building toys, crafts, sports, games, books, specific character sections (Paw Patrol, Pokemon, etc.). When my daughter was 4, she wanted a remote-control Caterpillar tractor. I went to the aisle with cars, trucks, and other vehicles and got one.
You will commie how I say to commie, or you will not be allowed to make a living. But don’t tell me you don’t have a choice, comrade.
