The Biden administration is facing heavy criticism from Native Alaskans over its crackdown on oil and gas drilling in Alaska, activity which generates tax revenue vital for key state and local programs.
Native Alaskan leaders have particularly taken issue with the Department of the Interior's (DOI) recent actions blocking future oil and gas development in the National Petroleum Reserve (NPR), an area in North Slope Borough, Alaska, specifically set aside by Congress for resource development, in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), and in federal offshore waters off the state's coast.
"My community unapologetically supports the leasing program," Charles Lampe, the president of the Kaktovik Iñupiat Corporation, told lawmakers in testimony this week. "Many people try to steer the debate to caribou. For Kaktovik, it's about our people and having an economy to survive."
"Congress needs to fulfill its promises made to us over 40 years ago," Lampe added. "We will not succumb to eco-colonialism and become conservation refugees on our own land. The people have every right to pursue economic, social and cultural self-determination. The laws of the U.S. should support indigenous populations, not interfere with these basic human and political rights."
In addition to Lampe, Nagruk Harcharek, the president of Voice of the Arctic Iñupiat; Josiah Patkotak, the Iñupiaq mayor of the North Slope Borough; Morrie Lemen, the executive director of the Iñupiat Community of the Arctic Slope; and Nathan Gordon Jr., the vice president of the Native Village of Kaktovik, among others have similarly condemned federal restrictions on resource development near their communities.

Could have been worse.
If climate genius Al Gore had been right in his first few years of lectures about “global warming” we could have witnessed Baked Alaska by now.
The natives are restless.
Restless, yeah, maybe they’ll vote a few bad ones out of office...
The peasants, they are revolting.
Good luck with that, Charles. Many native tribes here in the Lower 48 are still waiting for Congress to fulfill the promises it made to the natives almost 200 years ago.
Alaska would be a great place for a break away Republic.
Get a clue and vote conservative.
I walked down the front steps of the Milne Point camp where I used to work on the shore of the Arctic Ocean one warm July day in the 1990’s. There were about 200 caribou sleeping amongst the pilings that supported the building enjoying the shade and the minimal insect protection it provided. Of course environmentalists and bureaucrats would never acknowledge that such a thing would ever occur or that musk ox would use road markers as scratching posts. I HATE commiecrats.
LOL I hate ‘em too!
I didn’t want to crowd the thread too much so I didn’t post more pics of caribou using the pipeline for shade in the summer and warmth in the winter and bears using the pipeline as an easy highway from one place to another.
Those people don’t know what’s good for them. We’re saving the planet for their own good./sarc
There’s a few lefties and “nativists” in these tribes up here but the majority want to have money and wealth that comes from oil and mining. This is a fact but the media won’t report it.
Of course many natives are also addicted to federal welfare too but many realize that natural resources are their way of poverty.
but a majority voted for uber gope weasel Lis Murkowski- who delivers votes to lock in regime policies and apparatchiks who implement said policy. You voted for it you suffer with it
I wrote a report about the pipeline back in Junior High while it was being built. I recall reading/writing about the benefits of the pipeline on the nearby animals like you said. They’d probably send me to a re-education camp if I wrote it today!
I’m convinced all media editors have been fired or work drunk. The leaders “unleash” on the administration.? Where are the quotes in the article that support that headline? “Unleashing”‘would include denouncing the climate change hoax or the reflexively anti-energy policies of the left,
Not the milquetoast quotes presented here
That's because they are valued more than humans.
