Strange fact about the Alaskan pipeline. The “experts” said it would harm the caribou herds when they migrate. The truth is the exposed pipeline radiates residual heat and can be 20 degrees warmer than the surrounding area. The caribou hundle around it and the ground around it sprouts grass earlier than the surrounding land. This equals less stress on the caribou in the winter, earlier migration north because of more grass. Most caribou are pregnant with 2 to 3 calves, birth survival depends on health and fat reserves. Fatter mothers means more calves survive, leaner mothers means only one calf. When I was in Alaska in the 80’s the herds were beginning to show signs of growth, the herds that followed the pipeline were having 2 to 3 calves instead of one. It was slow growth but it was significantly above the birth average.
