Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) is pushing a ban on AR-15s by focusing on their gas operation system approximately 64 years after the gun’s design included such a system.
Breitbart News reported that Sen. Angus King (I-ME) and a group of Senate Democrats, including Kelly, introduced an AR-15 ban early Thursday. In so doing, they used new catchphrases such as “lethal capacity weapons” and “gas-operated semiautomatic.
Later Thursday, Kelly posted a video on X in which he continued to emphasize the new catchphrases by explaining that this latest attempt to ban AR-15s and similar rifles “focuses on the lethality of their internal mechanisms.”

Gas drives the piston.
When they run on electricity instead of “gas” they will be widely accepted by Democrats.
That makes as much sense as the idea that AR’s should be banned because they look scary.
Curious, why was he turned down?
Never mind, I remember the store turned him down.
He’s just talking to the ignorant. Geez I can’t stand assholes like him.
From the proposed bill:
(40) The term ‘gas-operated’, with respect to a semi-automatic firearm, means any firearm that harnesses or traps a portion of the high-pressure gas from a fired cartridge to cycle the action using—
(A) a long stroke piston, where gas is vented from the barrel to a piston that is mechanically fixed to the bolt group and moves to cycle the action;They just emphasized "gas-operated" so they could get the acronym "GOSAFE."
(B) a short stroke piston, where gas is vented from the barrel to a piston that moves separately from the bolt group so that the energy is imparted through a gas piston to cycle the action;
(C) a system that traps and vents gas from either the barrel or the chamber to directly strike or impinge the bolt, bolt carrier, or slide assembly, to unlock and cycle the action;
(D) a hybrid system that combines elements of a system described in subparagraph (C) with a system described in subparagraph (A) or (B) to capture gas vented from the barrel to cycle the action;
(E) a blowback-operated system that directly utilizes the expanding gases of the ignited propellant powder acting on the cartridge case to drive the breechblock or breech bolt rearward; or
(F) a recoil-operated system that utilizes the recoil force to unlock the breech bolt and then to complete the cycle of extracting, ejecting, and reloading.
LOL!!! One of my early experiences in the Army at ROTC summer camp in 1964 (that’s right, 1964) was getting the new recruit’s classic illness of “M1 Thumb” when I didn’t get my thumb out of the way of the bolt as it was coming forward. Since, before the Tragic Boating Accident, I owned two AR 15 style rifles, I know that particular injury is not one that new recruits need to fear, the design of the weapon having been changed.
I’m converting my AR-15 to coal. Just to piss them off.
I can’t wait for CMP ARs.
This freak wants to ban your M1 Garand (circa 1929).
I’ve converted my Ruger PCC to nuclear. Clean, safe energy.
gas-operated semiautomatic
And, horror of horrors, it shoots LIVE ammunition...
Wouldn't be worth it. Buy one on the free market; you'll get a better weapon in better condition.
Humans are gas operated.
kelly is gas operated... feh
The right of the people go keep and bear arms, but not if directly impinged.
My guns have gas?
This isn’t ignorance, it’s treachery.
There’s a group of anti-gun activists based in Norcal and in DC who have been trying to get around a couple of decades of court rulings that the efforts to ban “features” that kept getting overturned, all essentially resting on the laws being “void for vagueness” . For about a decade, California kept chasing its tail, adding “new” firearms to their “assault weapons list”, because the courts had said that it wasn’t reasonable to expect someone to realize that their rifle was an “assault weapon” because it had something that someone could later say was a banned fature.
So they went back to the drawing board, and in Cali, said “ok, you can’t have a detachable magazine” on a centerfire semi-automatic rifle. But even that didn’t work at first, because people invented the “bullet button”, and so the state had to draft new legislation to ban that, specifically.
This latest dodge has been simmering for a while, and I first caught wind of it from what people still remember as the “Legal Community Against Gun Violence” (now a part of Giffords gun-grabbing Everytown), who are certainly evil gun-grabbers and far-left socialist dirtbags, but are a long way from being stupid. They had realized, through their experience litigating the California legislation (they’re based in San Francisco), was that they needed to focus on something that was both “non ambiguous”, and fundamental to the functioning of modern firearms. This bill is the latest, and now national, example of this new approach.
These people are dangerous, and like the Terminator, they just won’t stop. We need to stay ahead of them, and be aware of their latest schemes. Otherwise, they’ll seize a momentary control of the congress, senate and presidency as they did with Obamacare, and ram something radical through.
It’s a mistake to underestimate their lust for power, willingness to lie, and frankly, their creativity.
They literally chose the term to make the acronym work.
