A little more than six weeks after Congress scrambled at the last minute to keep the federal government functioning, the country is again on the precipice of a shutdown.
It’s “Groundhog Day” Washington-style, but it’s anything but funny. The current crisis likely will be solved the way the last one was, by Democrats in the House coming to the rescue of a Republican speaker who faces opposition from extreme elements within his own party.

If a small cadre of the party insists on vacating the hair, assuming a majority of GOP yes votes, it's time to evaluate how this party operates. And yes, we need to look at the rule that says one Rep can initiate the vote to vacate. Bad rule.
The country is broke. The few people in the GOP trying to cut spending aren’t the “extreme elements”. They represent most Americans.
I get the feeling that the GOP will absolutely give the Democrats whatever they want. The GOP can’t stomach a shutdown.
It’s the LA slimes. If I lined my catbox with a copy of it my cat would pee and take a dump on my bed in protest.
Only 14% in one poll said Biden made them better off.......
and they were all members of the Biden Crime Family.
You are correct. The United States is deeply in debt. A government shutdown would be a very good thing, as it might wake a few people up. And it might even lead to a balanced budget.
Unfortunately, the media would present all of this as a disaster. Grandma won’t get her Social Security check! VA hospitals will close! The GOP would be blamed, and they would fold.
Sigh. So off the cliff we go.
When Republicans do what Democrats want, it’s called bipartisanship.
When Democrats do what Republicans want (even if it is mostly what the Dems would do anyway), it’s called rescuing the GOP.
Johnson needs time to get all the separate bills through the House. I’m willing to give him a break between now and January, as long as he keeps up the regular order end of the bargain.
It doesn’t matter which names end up on the agreement. It’s complicated keeping track of who can best get away with a yes vote at any particular time, and some vote trading for future favors probably has to play out too.
“A government shutdown would be a very good thing, as it might wake a few people up. And it might even lead to a balanced budget.”
The government has shutdown 21 times since 1976 and accomplished exactly nothing or possibly worse than nothing since we aren’t told everything.
> The government has shutdown 21 times since 1976 and accomplished exactly nothing… <
And that’s because the fiscal conservatives always fold, and kick the can down the road. “A balanced budget? That’s important! We’ll do it next year.” But of course that next year never comes.
In a way, I get it. The aunt who says “no” to a nephew demanding candy isn’t much liked. But every kid likes the aunt who gives them all the sweets they want.
Agreed, FRiend, and they don’t even write a budget. That ended in 2009. The House just ignores that job now no matter which party is in power. The short-cut way allows for a lot more chicanery, they’ll probably never write another budget.
“The few people in the GOP trying to cut spending aren’t the “extreme elements”. They represent most Americans.”
...spot on correct. The propaganda machine is and has been in full swing to convince dummies that these “few” are extremists. Seems to working pretty well. There are sh** loads of dummies.
RINO pinhead thinking.
8 Uni-Party members voted yesterday to let Mayorkas off the hook. They will fold their tent and run for the hills on the shut down opportunity.
How many of the 14(?) individual budget bills have been passed by the house and are sitting dead in the senate?
Only big government folks freak out over “shutting the government down”.
I’ve never been inside the Capital, even on J6, so I can’t tell you much about the critters inside. But they sure do seem to be acting like every state’s DOT or DMV.
It passed 345 to 95. That’s pretty overwhelming. Not many bills get that many votes. I guess most liked this tactic of splitting the bill into two parts.
this CR tactic has been effective in growing govt for over 10 years
once the conversation changes to govt shutdown
any discussion of cutting spending stops
