Petraeus says post-war Israeli occupation of Gaza likely ‘inescapable

Israel will likely have to occupy Gaza post-war, due to fears Hamas would reestablish a stronghold in the region, according to former CIA director and military expert David Petraeus.

“This is about ensuring that Hamas cannot reconstitute itself,” Petraeus said.

Aaron David Miller, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, sat down with Petraeus for an event the think tank hosted Tuesday, where the two discussed the United States’ role in international conflicts, including the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Hamas war.

While Petraeus echoed the Biden administration’s concerns that Israeli occupation of Gaza would be unfavorable, he admitted that it is likely inevitable, at least post-war, because he didn’t believe there would be a Palestinian rule that could effectively rebuild and restructure Gaza.

I hope the Gaza lesson is clear to Israel: the Land-For-Peace concept is thoroughly debunked.

The Muslims will always use the territory as a forward base to launch attacks at Israel. They will hide among the locals and strike with missiles and mortars. They will continue overnight raids into Israel to harrass and murder Jews.

If Israel is to survive, I see no alternative but to occupy Gaza and clean it out house-by-house. Borders and ports must be controlled for smuggled weapons and terrorists. And the populace must be policed to maintain this.

"That is why, even in war, we treat the enemy respectfully."

And even that hasn't brought respect from our enemies, or victory over them for decades now. When the government decided to put lawyers on the battlefield to teach our military how not to offend their enemies, this country lost the ability to win any war, using whatever means possible. I doubt Harry Truman sat around a table with a bunch of lawyers before he decided to offend Japan by dropping the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The Golan Heights used to be a wasteland.
Now is covered in vinyards and fields growing crops.
Gaza has some great ocean front property.
They could have built resorts but instead built bombs.

Yup. Kill or be killed.

However, Americans have always had the reputation of being civil even during war. The Germans wanted to surrender to the Americans and not the Russians.

While fighting a war, we should always be thinking about what will happen when we are no longer killing the enemy. And yes, our ally may become our enemy and our enemy may become our ally... Turn Turn Turn. War is temporary — we hope.

Britain... the Revolutionary War.
Japan... WWII.
Germany... WWI and WWII.
The South... the Civil War.
Russia, China... The Cold War.

You have to kill all of the men.

But we didn’t have to kill all the German and Japanese men after we won WWII. We occupied the nations for a while, and dealt with the worst of their leadership. But there was no mistake on anyone’s part, both Japan and Germany were hammered so hard that they decided not to misbehave again.

Israel pulled out and turned control over Gaza, in 2005? They’ve only had the world give them money and attack Israel since. Worthless bunch.

Exactly. They would be fools to allow this to happen again. More dead civilians at the hands of the Hamas (or whatever) animals.

Some suggest that Hamas tipped Iran's hand and jumped the gun. Iran was planning a coordinated attack. Hamas showed the world their true nature — rape, murder, killing babies — that even the Pali supporting crazies cannot deny. Oh they will deny but sane people will know differently.

Force the entire Pal population out, into Sinai.
Bulldoze all the rubble into the Med .

Turn Gaza back into fields and farms, with very few people.
Foreign farm workers only, no Arabs.

They have made their nest, and now they can sleep in it.

Without the Arab population, Gaza could become a major breadbasket for the entire region.

They could have turned Gaza into a Singapore of the middie east. A commercial hub. Dynamic. But the people that live squat there are probably incapable of doing so. Too consumed by wanting to kill Jews

Are they going to take over the West Bank, too? I hope so.

Ultimately, the Arabs that matter will step in with money and take control of both Gaza and the west bank. A new order minus Hamas and the PA will be established.

Israel will be a party and consent.

The territory of Palestine will be controlled by a commision established under the Negev Summit

President Trump deserves the credit

But...but...occupation bad. Reestablish Gush Katif in the Philippic Corridor, then, and commit the troops and assets for constant vigilance. Whatever Sharon was thinking when he evacuated Gush Katif, it was wrong and didn’t work.

I hope the Gaza lesson is clear to Israel: the Land-For-Peace concept is thoroughly debunked.

On paper, we want land for peace. But Arafat rejected that in 2000. So that's the end of that.

Technically, the second state is Jordan. Jordan was part of the British mandate of Palestine.

You might be right about moslems, I don’t know. But the Germans and Japanese soldiers were quite capable of truly horrible acts. But the fact that we seriously beat the living crap out of their countries made them change their ways.

Hopefully Israel’s response to October 7, will be so ferocious that Hamas will be forced sue for surrender. The Germans didn’t surrender until virtually all of Germany was a wreck, even after flattening Tokyo, the Japanese still thought they could hold out after two atomic bomb attacks. I believe we only had one more bomb available for a third city.

I’m sure the Israelis will be kinder conquerors of Gaza than say the Russians were towards the part of Germany they controlled.
