Before graduating, students should demonstrate a minimum competence in math, science, and general knowledge.
The sheer madness that has gripped many elite universities since October 7 and the butchery, rape, torture, and mutilation of some 1,000 Israeli civilians by Hamas murderers have shocked the public at large.
Campus craziness is, of course, nothing new. But quite novel for campuses was the sudden jettisoning of prior campus pretenses. Universities have brazenly dropped their careful two-faced gymnastics to reveal at last–unapologetically, proudly, and defiantly–the moral decay that now characterizes American higher education.
Recent news stories have exposed this rot to the world, and will have grave repercussions for higher education in the next few years.
The Nazis once desecrated the tombstones of dead Jews. Our campuses have updated that hatred. Students now tear down pictures of Jewish captives kidnapped or murdered by Hamas. University presidents do not condemn the hate-filled rallies supporting the killing of Jews in Israel, even though, according to their own safety-first ideology and prior proclamations about systemic hatred, these rallies instill a “climate of fear” in some students.
An instructor at Stanford separated Jewish students from their belongings, ordered them to stand in the corner, boasted about denying the Holocaust, and singled them out for unhinged rantings. Screaming campus activists and professors openly support Hamas even after its brutal killing of hundreds of Israeli women, children, and infants. That for more than two weeks thousands of rockets—barrages initially designed to enhance the surprise mass murdering of October 7—daily continue to shower down upon Israeli cities is of zero concern to loud campus activists.
An even bolder Cornell history faculty member bragged that he was “exhilarated” on news that Jews were butchered on October 7. A UC Davis professor threatened to go after the children of “Zionist journalists.”

I don’t know why VDH has a negative view of Joseph McCarthy. It seems to me that history has shown that he was pretty much correct.
VDH ping
stop stealing from us and paying morons to go there ... it just ends up paying the morons that work there ...
It is claimed the communists said “’The Capitalists will sell us the rope with which we will hang them.”
Today people take out loans to go to reeducation camps formally known as colleges.
From the article:
“If the SAT and ACT are increasingly dropped for admissions to universities, then an exit version of them should be required to ensure that all BA and BS degrees certify at least a minimum competence in math, science, and general knowledge.”
Who’s going to agree to that and fork over their college fund? Not the first time I’ve noticed VDH doesn’t always think things through.
“An instructor at Stanford separated Jewish students from their belongings, “ordered them to stand in the corner,‘
That’s on the students who allowed him to do it in the first place.
VDH is a charming man, but ultimately full of ideological mush.
What if, at least, there was an independent, third-party entity who created a series of tests that determines minimum competency (as defined by employers) in critical areas that employers, at their choosing, could require employees to take as part of the interview process?
Substandard colleges and their substandard graduates would quickly be identified for the world to see.
Give him points for trying, but yes VDH is offering fixes for something broken beyond fixing. Like duct taping over cracks in the foundation. He catalogues the decline well though.
The fix is to make the Universities co-borrowers on all student loans paid to the university.
If the student was not provided adequate education to make them a profitable member of society and thus are unable to pay back their loans, the university has to pay it back.
That’s the fix.
A sign of American cowardice and cultural rot that they and their detested spawn are here.
Agree that there was nothing wrong with McCarthy and his so-called 'witch hunt'.
The fact is, communists then as now immediately ridicule those who have them spotted and who clearly understand what they are doing.
Conspiracy theorists! Paranoids! Kooks!, etc., etc. It's standard Cold War Soviet tactical rhetoric.
What is amazing is the fact that, to this day, calling someone a McCarthyite is still a term of derision. It is a sign of how effective that particular psyops was and still is.
In the face of overwhelming evidence of thoroughgoing communist infiltration of academia and Hollywood, the majority of people still believe McCarthy dreamt it all up.

“Mush” — Really? Such as what?
‘In the face of overwhelming evidence of thoroughgoing communist infiltration of academia and Hollywood, the majority of people still believe McCarthy dreamt it all up.”
McCarthy was spot-on back then. It’s just sad and a tragic symptom of America’s dysfunction that most Americans were not capable of recognizing that truth in that era... and most not even now.
The ultimate irony re: that “blacklisting” thing is... the Hollywood communists have turned it around on us and now blacklist anyone that is ‘not’ on their leftist side of the aisle. If only people could have seen the future back then.
Let’s face facts. The tactics of the Marxist left, including mocking and derision of those that have their number, seem to be working... only too well. Especially now in this time of “social media” influencing and wokeism.
I don’t disagree that your idea is suitable but we also need to allow that our universities are filled with middle easterners that are paying cash oil money to enrich universities and they are here often on educational visas or recent immigrants allowed by the last decades of ignoring our immigration laws.
There are some where it is over 20% or 30% foreign students. A George Mason law student claimed 44% recently.
Such as with the suspension of our constitutional rights—and for a fake pandemic and mass murder at that.
He’s a longtime Kissinger colleague at the SRI and it showed.
All the big problems America faces can be traced right back to Washington. The answer to most of those problems is shrinking the Central Government by a large degree. It’s like a huge malignancy that is killing everything good about America. Until we elect better people to high office charged with drastically downsizing the Federal cancer, it will only get worse.
I love VDH, but dislike his use of the term McCarthyite here. Otherwise a very good piece.
The history (including that in Soviet archives) shows us that McCarthy was largely correct. And we should have been running Communists and Communist-sympathizers out of prominent positions in government, industry, media.
