The comments on social media have been brutal. Soldiers' concerns over dilapidated barracks that have faced years of neglect from Army officials, maintenance crews and Congress were being dismissed. It was pointed out that the generals, two West Point graduates with Roman numerals in their names, were seemingly shifting the blame to the junior enlisted.Meanwhile Biden has $100 billion for Ukraine with no way to account for where the money goes.

As a former member of the big red one, I wonder if GI have gone out of fashion.

At a certain point, mold is embedded in the building materials and must be removed and replaced, sometimes even in the framing.

Why? I lived in Quonset huts and tent cities during much of my time.

The Army Needs a Lot of Money for Barracks, But It's Fighting for Pocket Change Back in the 70s, when the Air Force and Army repositioned in Germany so that the Army could be in better position for the Fulda Gap, the facilities the Army left around Ramstein were atrocious. The Army's philosophy was that they may be "moving out" any time, so they didn't want to spend any money on facilities. The Air Force was just the opposite, so they spent large sums refurbishing the facilities the Army left.

That can take care of the mold on the visible surfaces, but what about mold in the ventilation and behind walls?

We don’t need so barracks for troops. We don’t need infrastructure for the US (one of Bidens promises), we need money for the Ukraine and refugees streaming across the border.

It doesn’t cost much to clean up barracks. Some cleaning agent. Some gloves. Some rags. Some E-2’s to E-4’s. If the barracks are dirty some after dinner marching parties. Easy peasy.

You can't have the enlisted persons clean...it might hurt their feelings, they might not have enough time to watch dancing with the stars or project runway...and if one of them should complain, well you are in a world of trouble then.

We need to go back to the old WWII wooden barracks. We never had “mold” problems with them. Okay. At least at all of the ones I lived in.

That’s complete bull shit, pardon my French. My family experienced this first hand in onbase housing at Ft. Bragg. They are clean. The mold was in places that you cannot clean. It is due to piss poor military contracts that build and maintain housing.

Meanwhile Biden has $100 billion for Ukraine with no way to account for where the money goes. Correction. The $100 billion is for Ukraine and Israel.

Rather than us pardon your French why not just obey JR’s rules of no cussing?

CORRECT
APPLIED VIGOROUSLY WITH ELBOW GREASE !!!
I Haven’t b ought any ‘409’ or other kinds of cleaning products for a very long time.
I USE AMMONIA-—straight—spray bottle I can refill.
l pay less than $4.00 for a half-gallon.
IT cuts grease quickly. YES, IT SMELLS——BUT IT WORKS !!!!!
I also NEVER throw away a toothbrush. Cleans where I cannot scrub.
Kids today do NOT know how to do much of anything that doesn’t involve their cell phones.

I don’t remember the cleaning of our barrack’s room as being optional. Once a week...Tuesday maybe...room inspection. If you didn’t pass, your division officer heard about it. Room would be clean NEXT week.

When I was in Korea, I worked in a Korean war era Quansit hut. The barracks were ok though.
