A couple of possibilities to explain Israel’s (and America’s) intelligence failures
American Thinker ^ | 10/08/23 | Andrea Widburg

For a sneak attack of the size Hamas launched against Israel to have happened (5,000 rockets, parachuters, towns infiltrated, Iranian and, possibly, Ukrainian involvement), there must have been an absolutely epic intelligence failure both in Israel and, to the extent the U.S. helps Israel with information, here in America, too. I have two ideas about how that could have happened, both of which are premised on significant problems within the two country’s intelligence services (especially Israel’s). I’ll start with the one that bespeaks actual evil and then get to the more likely one, which reflects human nature.

Some suggest that the Mossad is no longer working with the Israeli government but is, instead, doing whatever it can to undermine it. I’m perfectly ready to believe that. If you’ve been following the news about the reforms Netanyahu wanted to make to an out-of-control leftist judicial system in Israel, you know that many in the military and the Mossad were against Bibi’s actions. We’ve already seen in America that Deep State members cease to feel loyalty to their country as a whole and, instead, will use their government positions solely to advance one political party over the other.

Thus, it’s possible that anti-government personnel in Israel and anti-Israel personnel in the State Department in America (the ones who maybe could have helped prevent the attack) didn’t pay too much attention to chatter about a Hamas attack. They may have thought it would be like others before, with a little death here and a little death there. That would be enough to harm Netanyahu’s government without seriously harming Israel.

That’s a very scary idea. But here’s something that’s just as disturbing: Nobody caught what was about to happen because of institutional incompetence.

ONE OTHER POSSIBILITY:

Entropy is inevitable in all systems, whether natural or manmade. When it comes to national security, whether we’re talking about the whole bureaucracy or individuals within the bureaucracy, the trend will be to entropy. When nothing happens, it’s hard to remain endlessly vigilant. Indeed, even when bad things happen, humans eventually become inured. Constant adrenalin is impossible.

The same must hold true in Israel.

Hewy, remember earlier this week when the Dementia Joe Administration did a sudden reversal on building the wall (”waiving 26 laws to allow new construction of the wall”)?

Almost like someone in our intelligence agencies found out about the upcoming Hamas attack, and didn’t want the Kiddie Sniffer to look bad.

And then Israel got caught by surprise?

Almost like our intelligence agencies never warned them.

Well, let’s start with the 51 highly ranked Intelligence Officers who claimed that Hunter’s Laptop was Russian Disinformation.

Ukrainian involvement?

The derangement about Ukraine is moving into full psychosis.

The United States spends $90 billion per year for intelligence services to watch YouTube videos and learn about the Hamas attacks at the same time as everyone else.

Nobody caught what was about to happen because of institutional incompetence.

Our intelligence services have been devoting much resources to Diversity, Equity & Inclusivity and LGBTQ+ Pride!

That is to say, they've had other priorities.

The problem with his second choice is that if our intelligence agencies are no longer able to perform well, isn’t our woke military likely to do worse? (Gen. Milley, if you still can’t understand “woke,” send me an email. I’ll explain it for you.)

I don’t think there were failures. Things went exactly as planned. In the context of eschatology, we are circling the drain.

The author naively assumes that the purpose of a national intelligence agency is to identify and repel foreign threats.

The purpose of an intelligence agency is to help the government propagandize the citizenry of its own country.

Nobody caught what was about to happen because of institutional incompetence MALFEASANCE.

Fixed it.

Never attribute to incompetence that which is more easily understood as malice aforethought.

One common pattern is that a few intelligence operatives did sound the warning.... But it was ignored, something management will deal with after the bureaucratic paperwork is filed.

This is the nature of bureauacracy. A low ranking internet security techie reports the start of a suspected attack and asks permission to immediately stop it. He is not given permission. The issue will be on the agenda at the next meeting of the bureaucrat managers.

It could have been stopped when only 2 or 3 were infected. But because the bureaucracy is bureaucratic 50,000 are infected or hundreds of thousands of SSN are stolen.

This pattern happens over and over again, in terroris, in crime, in ordinary busines risk and opportunity.

Call it swamp..call it bureaurcracy.. call it business as usual.

It's most likely a combination of trying to hide or downplay intel that would make Netanyahu look strong by reacting (and maybe give him an excuse to crack down on leftist lawlessness) and complacency born from Iron Dome's previous success.

The bigger question is the lack of chatter and failure to detect and prevent the buildup of arms.

The first suggests the Iranians and their proxies have improved their internal security. The second suggests that arms are being supplied with a wink and a nod through the "humanitarian" NGOs and possibly by another government not previously suspected of actively arming Hamas, like Turkey.

I suspect Israel also focused on the historically important time period of Yom Kippur and the week before and after.

The attack came two weeks after Yom Kippur.

Probably a lot of senior officers had been working seven days a week and took this weekend off.

Did they fail or were they ignored...I still believe the ‘new’ border wall is a result of a heads up a few days ago that something was about to happen and they—Biden—was forced to start a build because the terrorists threat is now known.
