The Immortal 1911 Pistol, After 112 Years, Finally Retired From U.S. Military Service
Red State ^ | 10/6/23 | Ward Clark

After 123 years, the immortal Colt-Browning 1911 pistol has finally left U.S. military service. This is after a long history without parallel in the annals of American arms, a history that began well before the Great War. Advertisement

Early in the 20th century, the U.S. Army was looking to upgrade its standard service sidearm. The Army at that time was issuing the Colt M1892 revolver in the rather anemic .38 Long Colt cartridge, and U.S. servicemen found that this piece gave poor results, particularly when employed against rawhide-armored Moro rebels who were hopped up on drugs. To deal with this, the Army began to re-issue the great old M1873 Colt single action revolvers in .45 Colt, and also purchased a number of big-framed Colt New Service double action revolvers in .45 Colt, dubbing that piece the M1909 Colt. The extra wallop of the .45 round proved much more satisfactory in preventing U.S. servicemen from being pierced by Moro spears, so the Army began to look for a modern, semi-auto sidearm for a .45 caliber cartridge.

Marine Corps Systems Command (MARCORSYSCOM) confirmed to The War Zone that the replacement of the M45A1s with new M18s began last year and was completed by October 2022.

I saw a reality tv ( Fear thy Neighbor ) show about neigher shooting at each other. A witness said she saw her neighbor shoot another neighber ( holding an axe ) 8-9 times with no immidiated effect. She thought is was a toy gun firing blanks. In actuality 7 9mm rounds hit that neighber, many in the torso, and it did not result in incapcitating them until many minutes later.

8 rounds are plenty if you can hit the target. Better than spray and play anytime.

The only .45 I have now is a Springfield

Wouldn’t mind a 1911 - especially some of the nice ones pictured above

I hate to ask the price on that second one - I’m sure I couldn’t afford it

I got a 15 Round Stick and 1 of the 40 Drums and need to go make sure that they function correctly still.

If You have a Full sized it should work. I’m using a NORINCO and they fit.

Interesting article from RedState, thanks for posting it.

Ward Clark's numbers are flat wrong, though. Maybe he mean to type 112 and typed 123 instead....

2023-1911= n

Solve for n

(Hint: 1911, as in the year a certain handgun was adopted by the US War Department)

In boot I was actually afraid to fire the one I was handed cuz of how bad it rattled.

Scored Expert in spite of that.

Historic pistol .

Did I forget anything ?

Been up for 27+ hours and would like to snag a nap getting kinda fuzzy. Got Lemon and Custard pies made and in the fridge getting chilled. I might have to make some breakfast and see if that will induce a food coma so I can get that nap.

There are documented cases where the same thing has happened with a .45 ACP and the target was still in the fight.

There are even documented cases of officers scoring headshots with .45 ACP and failing to penetrate.

Nothing man-portable is a 100% assured one shot stop. And projectile development for 9mm has increased its statistical effectiveness to the point where there isn’t much if any practical terminal performance gap with .45 ACP.

Even if you can hit the target it may not be enough - there are increasing numbers of documented cases where emptying a 1911 into someone didn’t stop them - welcome to modern drugs.

1. That 1911 was quickly replaced with M3 and M3A1 grease guns in the antiboarding/shore security role. Full auto 1911s quickly batter themselves into uselessness, it turns out. To say nothing of the jamtacular nature of the hyperextended mags.

2. The M18 isn’t going to melt under most conditions - polymer pistols in full auto have been around since the 80s and the frame doesn’t melt under extended full auto fire... whereas the 1911 is known to crack its frame in the same scenario.
