A top Democrat in the House has detailed how her caucus is prepared to help Republican Speaker Kevin McCarthy keep his job in exchange for ending the impeachment inquiry he launched into President Joe Biden’s actions just weeks ago.
Congresswoman Katherine Clark (D-MA), the minority whip, promised she could marshal the votes to help McCarthy avoid an attempt by conservative Republicans to vacate the speaker’s chair which would require near-unanimous support from Democrats as well. Rep. Clark told POLITICO that she also intends to force McCarthy into a corner on aid to Ukraine and his ongoing negotiations with the White House to avoid a government shutdown.
“We want him to live up to the agreement [on toppling spending] that he made [with President Biden]. We want to get disaster aid out. We want to continue our support for Ukraine. And we want them to end this sham of an impeachment inquiry,” said Clark.
The charge to boot McCarthy has generally been led by Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL) who has accused the Speaker of inadequately negotiating during debt ceiling talks and conceding too much ground to Democrats. The small group of hardline conservatives need just five votes to prevent a deal between McCarthy and President Biden from passing the House.
Last week McCarthy essentially dared Gaetz and his cohort of rabble-rousers to try and remove him, declaring his support within the Republican caucus remains strong. However, cutting a deal with House Democrats to keep his speakership at the expense of budget cuts may be seen as a bridge too far, further eroding the California Republican’s ability to whip votes in the future.
When Republicans took control of Congress in January, McCarthy famously endured 15 rounds of voting before he was elected Speaker, one of the most divisive selections in American history. He is described by allies as a fighter who believes he can prevail over conservatives who he generally loathes as unpatriotic and unserious about reaching consensus.
To keep his job, Speaker McCarthy is relying on support from conservative lawmakers like Rep. James Comer (R-KY) and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) who are leading the investigation into President Biden’s alleged participation in his son’s business affairs. The Republican leader has also benefited from tenuous support by former President Donald Trump, who although at times has questioned McCarthy’s sincerity in defending him during a busy primary election.
Jim Jordan moves into the America last column. Too much talking not enough delivering. The uni-party curtain flicked aside and Jim/Kevin revealed.
What expectations do you have on Jordan that he’s not delivering on? He can’t indict people, he cannot arrest people. He’s not the speaker...
Don’t trust Democrats. The knife goes in your back the moment you turn around.
Send 1M illegals to Kathy Clark’s district.
My hometown gets 11,000/day.
We can gin up a Mil or so overnight.
If you compromise with evil, you just get more evil.......................
“We want to get disaster aid out. We want to continue our support for Ukraine. And we want them to end this sham of an impeachment inquiry,” said Clark.”
Hmmm. That last sentence sounds like a throw away line to me.
That little sentence does a lot of work carrying that big headline on its back, and is not otherwise discussed in the article. Pretty
sloppy analysis/ writing. The only person of that name I see online is a Kansas State Senator of that name, but, per the link in the article, the whole thing seems to lifted from Breitbart
And so, to punish him for this thin soup, this author get a smack from the grammar Nazi: “try and remove” is a slang formulation and should not be used in formal writing. It should be “try TO remove.”
The vichy republicans are so worthless.
I can’t believe that Kevin McCarthy would be that stupid. It’s one thing to vacate the chair its another to vacate your seat in congress.
It he did this his political career would be over.
Is this the Texas model? Dems deciding who will be the SOTH with a republican majority.
“The question is, who is going to step into the gutter?”
They’re all in the gutter. The real question is who is willing to fight their way out.
Kevin will go for that in a heartbeat!
You mean she forgot to put on a t***n—A SEXIST WOULD SAY!
Somehow, "integrity" and "Republicans" cannot exist in the same sentence.
Psyops pure psyops
Don’t believe a word of this
It will be the other way around.
McCarthy will call for a bill of impeachment on Thursday and the rodents will beg him for a chance to join in the vote.
There is no way McCarthy will force a vote on a new Speaker and take rodent votes to hold on.Forget it Surrender Monkeys.
The correct answer from McCarthy is shut it down until a rational budget is passed that includes STOPPING THE INVASION OF OUR COUNTRY.
In parallel get the impeachment process started, everyone knows Biden was the product and a ton of money was made. What we may not know is what influence, information, etc was given.
If McCarhy isn’t up to being a patriotic leader, then go home.
Congresswoman Katherine Clark (D-MA), the minority whip, told POLITICO that she intends to force McCarthy into a corner on aid to Ukraine.“We want to continue our support for Ukraine,” said Clark.
60 Minutes reported not only do Democrats pay for
<><>57,000 Ukraine First Responders,
<><>pensions, and salaries for health care and education officials, and other “humanitarian needs,
<><>but also pays salaries, pensions and “associated expenses” of the massive Ukrainian govt,
<><>and $$$ aid to Ukranian small businesses including helping them find foreign markets.
That adds up to a “niggling $2 billion per month” as Democrats
demand another $24 billion allocation for the never satisfied Ukraine.
I’m laughing at that comment, but crying at the same time.
and that will be the last thing McCuckthy will pass
Fortunately we are being shown in living color that the Congress cannot safeguard the future of America. We are going to keep being shown this over and over until a majority of people will be relieved when the military steps in.
