So you got yourself a brand new, $70,000 subsidized electric vehicle (EV), and everyone on your block is envious. Quiet, non-polluting, cheaper to operate than a gas-powered vehicle, right?
That’s not entirely accurate. The grim fact is, you better pray your EV never breaks down. The electric vehicle manufacturers sort of forgot to train the necessary number of mechanics to service your beautiful new car, leaving you with repair costs that will be through the roof.
It seems like too obvious a detail to overlook. And it’s going to blow up the EV industry once a couple of millions of them are on the road.
EV’s are, it turns out, incredibly dangerous to work on. The electric voltage technicians work with could kill mechanics very quickly. Then there’s the fire hazard with EV batteries.
And the specialized diagnostic equipment needed to service EV’s is putting off most small, independent repair shops that experts agree are going to be needed to keep the cost of repairs and warranties down.

Since the government is so heavily involved in dictating the environment, I expect it will soon look like getting the government involved in managing the Sahara; soon there will be a shortage of sand.
One more thing; since EV's don't have to worry about CAFE requirements (yet), why don't they have real bumpers with shock-absorbing protection against low-speed impacts? Based on the horror stories I see about the cost of repairing even little bumps, it seems that reducing the impact of collisions would be a good thing for the infrastructure.

I heard that when they started putting computers in cars small independents were doomed.
The hybrids often have their catalytic convertors stolen.

Sorry, but of the 800 BILLION dollars that Tesla is now worth, only a couple billion come from subsidies or selling green credit. All you Tesla skeptics have been giving terribly wrong, terribly bad advice for years, and yet you never stop.

I’m curious....how much the replacement tires cost compared to tires for an ICE vehicle? I’ve read they are much more expensive and don’t last as long. True? I have no clue. Thanks.
Sorta related: I told hubby earlier today that a very innovative generation tried solar and wind power decades ago. They had windmills to power that one well to draw water into a bucket and to put water into a trough for the cattle. They also had solar powered dryers that worked as long as the sun was out and the weather was warm and dry.
The windmills had to have constant maintenance and the government didn’t like the unsightly view of the solar clothes dryer. And they both only worked intermittently. So, those creative men kept innovating until they developed electricity. Yet we still haven’t found a way to store electricity long-termed in a reliable and safe manner for reuse.
If the prior two generations couldn’t do it, I doubt the soy boys of today will make it happy. Hard times make strong men. Maybe the next generation will perfect the battery powered vehicle. However, it is not yet ready for prime time. The government needs to stop trying to force it. Their attempts to do so is destroying our nation.

Tesla sells Megapack units to utilities and large commercial concerns and the PowerWall for homes.
I’ve never seen the inside of one of those things, but it would probably take some getting used to.

There were photos a few years back of thousands of never used Ford PU’s in the USA “rotting away”.
There is a hell of alot I CAN DO MYSELF on my 1976 truck & 1979 station wagon.
