I’m curious....how much the replacement tires cost compared to tires for an ICE vehicle? I’ve read they are much more expensive and don’t last as long. True? I have no clue. Thanks.
EV batteries are heavy, so the cars need heavy duty tires. The weight of the vehicle will make them wear faster too. On a regular car, you can get by okay with cheap tires, but not with an EV.
The replacement tires weren’t any more expensive than the speed rated tires I buy for one of my other cars.
I chose ones with 60,000 miles rating and a warranty.
On the flip side, I get virtually no brake pad wear because almost all of my braking is done through regen. (I'm sure the day is coming when I'll need to replace my brake pads.) Plus no oil changes, which I religiously do every 5K miles in my ICE cars. IMHO the extra cost for tires is less than the savings on brakes and oil changes.
That said, there are tons of other pros and cons to look at before getting an EV. The bottom line is I wouldn't get one unless you need 2 cars anyway (one EV and one ICE means you get to choose what's best for that day's needs), don't live in a very cold climate, can charge at home, live in an area with dependable power (not 3rd world California), and drive enough miles for the gas savings to be worth it.
