So can Biden issue a blanket pardon for all crimes he has committed?
Its a bs ruling. I can see certain scenarios where a congress brimgs false charges agaimst a president (cough cough Trump) for political reasons
But not if they really have committed actual crimes
Didn’t someone here say last year about Trump that state violations stay after federal pardons? Not sure about this.
Gerald Ford ruined his personal chance at a re-election because he decided the American people and Nixon should not have to bear the stress of a long legal battle including civil penalties of prison against a former President.
Fat lot of good that did for the Dems doing everything they can to hurt Trump and us.
President Gerald R. Ford’s Proclamation #4311
granting a Pardon to Richard Nixon
September 8, 1974
-
“...Now, THEREFORE, I, GERALD R. FORD, President of the United States,
pursuant to the pardon power conferred upon me by Article II, Section 2,
of the Constitution, have granted and by these presents do grant
a full, free, and absolute pardon unto Richard Nixon for all offenses
against the United States which he, Richard Nixon,
has committed or may have committed or taken part in
during the period from January 20, 1969 through August 9,1974...
-
“...for all offenses...
...he has committed...
...or may have committed...
...or taken part in...”
The Founders wisely put checks and balances into our system of government. But then they gave the President a king-like pardon power.
There should have been something in place to check presidential pardon power. Perhaps Congress should be able to override a pardon, just as they can override a veto. Such an event would be rare. But least there would be a hearing, and a debate.
If I ever invent a Time Machine, I’m going to mention this to George, Ben, and the boys.
BTTT
IIRC——A PRESIDENT CANNOT PARDON HIMSELF.
If, as some of us believe possible, JB is not really the President due to continuity of government arrangements,
or if, as some of us believe possible, JB will eventually be declared an illegitimate President due to election fraud,
then any pardon he grants would likely be illegitimate.
I suspect that all of this is an exercise designed to make us think about the issue of pardons. I’m still in favor of the President having the power to pardon anyone, but I’m open to listening to arguments against it. A poor argument is saying that JB will pardon himself and his son. One specific case / one specific bad President does not IMO invalidate the wisdom of granting the President this power.
