ANZ and NAB have announced they were no longer permitting cash withdrawals over the counter at some of their outlets as more banking is done online than with cash.
The move comes after Queensland woman Taryn Comptyn was unable to withdraw cash from her local bank branch and ended up closing her account in a now-viral TikTok clip.
'They really did emphasise the need to call ahead if you're going to take out significant amounts of money,' she told Daily Mail Australia.
'If you're taking out amounts that are over $10,000, it's worth calling ahead to make sure that they have the money available in that branch.
'When you're talking about buying and selling secondhand items, there's so many scammers out there trying to rip you off with the latest pay ID scam, a lot of people on Facebook Marketplace say, "No PayID".'
Canstar group executive financial services Steve Mickenbecker said holding large amounts of cash in a branch posed a security risk as more banks went digital.
'It's not surprising that they are holding a lot less cash β it's a security risk and dead money sitting in a vault somewhere,' he told The Australian.
In her TikTok video, Ms Comptyn went to her ANZ branch to withdraw $3,500 to pay for renovations but did not have her ATM card handy.
'I thought "that's fine" I will just go to the teller',' she said in the clip.
'The teller proceeds to tell me they don't have cash in the bank anymore, that you can only get it out through the ATM but she said "don't worry I'll set you a card up so you can just tap it in place of your card".'

Ythe Mark of the Beast will come
In the middle of the 7 years of ‘Peace and Security’
The world ππ hasn’t seen anything yet
COVID-19(84) will seem incredibly easy by comparison.
The world ππ just keeps inching closer and closer to totalitarian control of your finances so that no man (or woman) can buy or sell without government approval; likely WORLD ππ government authorization.
Those who think it won’t happen are not paying attention.

Australia is way ahead of us on the road to fascism. I predict they will outlaw cash entirely in 2 years. Government access and control of electronic accounts will be implemented shortly.
Likely so.......
Not sure I understand your question, but when I was a head teller, a whole other division handled the ATM’s.
In the earlier days when I was just a teller, the branch staff was the one to fill the machine and balance the ATM. I recall have to mark certain bills at the 1K mark to make accounting for all that cash easier.
Then it slowly started to change that a different division started handling the ATM’s and the branches were no longer responsible for them.
“I’d like an appointment to withdraw $25,000 of my money.”
“OK, come by on Tuesday at 1:15. Bring your ID, passport and debit card. And be prepared to document the purpose of the withdrawal to the nice young armed IRS agent who will facilitate the transaction.”
Yeah — funny how fast things change.
So now they know that a home invasion is probably worth their while.
They effectively do that already by capping how much you can withdraw daily from an atm. So that already happened.
Next theyβll give you an Allowance , heard they are doing it in lebanon. allowance given of your own money according to your earnings
I’ll set you a card up so you can just tap it in place of your card”.
But only at the company store.
What’s old is new again.
Australians are Europeanized. That is what is going.
The Australian is a serf and not a citizen.
They love their socialism and they gave up their rights to have it.
Luggage trackers are great for that.
Nah, most folks that do this go for the low-hanging fruit.
Bank runs worked in the past.
Pick a bank. Kill it.
Message not received? Pick another. Repeat as necessary.
Cash is king.
Thanks.
Best make sure your social credit score is high enough!
Plan where you want that mark too. Head or hand?
If you follow God, they will cut you off. If you follow Satan, they’ll let you participate.
Australia is finished. So is most of Europe. We’re next.
You will not find many places that accept cash in Australia anyway. Grocery stores and fast food stands still do, generally, but most other places and especially restaurants will not. I went to NSW and Queensland for six weeks last year. I took about 2K in AUD with me and returned with 1.5K unspent.
When we make large withdrawals (for example $5000), my wife has me tuck it into my inner zipped pocket. My hand is on a weapon in my outside jacket pocket. The money is never left in a car, and is always on me until we get home. As we drive up to our home, we only go in if no one is following, otherwise we continue driving past our home.
The thing that pisses us off is when a bank teller loudly counts back the money that other customers can overhear. We always tell the teller to be discrete, but some are idiots. We like using cash, as our transactions are not tracked, and less chance of a credit card being abused by others.
There have been cases where the tellers were in on it, signalling to their hoodrat boyfriends that somebody just made a big withdrawal.
