ANZ and NAB have announced they were no longer permitting cash withdrawals over the counter at some of their outlets as more banking is done online than with cash.
The move comes after Queensland woman Taryn Comptyn was unable to withdraw cash from her local bank branch and ended up closing her account in a now-viral TikTok clip.
'They really did emphasise the need to call ahead if you're going to take out significant amounts of money,' she told Daily Mail Australia.
'If you're taking out amounts that are over $10,000, it's worth calling ahead to make sure that they have the money available in that branch.
'When you're talking about buying and selling secondhand items, there's so many scammers out there trying to rip you off with the latest pay ID scam, a lot of people on Facebook Marketplace say, "No PayID".'
Canstar group executive financial services Steve Mickenbecker said holding large amounts of cash in a branch posed a security risk as more banks went digital.
'It's not surprising that they are holding a lot less cash – it's a security risk and dead money sitting in a vault somewhere,' he told The Australian.
In her TikTok video, Ms Comptyn went to her ANZ branch to withdraw $3,500 to pay for renovations but did not have her ATM card handy.
'I thought "that's fine" I will just go to the teller',' she said in the clip.
'The teller proceeds to tell me they don't have cash in the bank anymore, that you can only get it out through the ATM but she said "don't worry I'll set you a card up so you can just tap it in place of your card".'

Correct. Most ATM’s are operated separate from the branches. This way the branches do not need to maintain cash vaults or balance ATM’s against the branch balance at the end of the day.
It is like that here in the United States too. Banks made that transition years ago here.
Never patronize a retailer who won’t accept cash.
The globalist dream is to have nothing but cards, so that they can freeze your bank accounts if you don’t adhere to their politics.
Also, it makes it easier to tax you into oblivion.

My worldly buddy recommended banking with HBSC. Can’t one just travel with one of their atm cards?
At Christmas time last year, my local bank decreased the maximum cash withdrawal each day from $3K to $2K without calling ahead. The teller told me they were having a massive increase in cash withdraws. Oh course now that Christmas is well past, the max is still at $2K.
No one wants to admit that this is because of the massive number of illegal immigrants who only deal in cash payments.
I call ahead now and have never been denied but that day of denial is coming.
I’ve had a branch tell me I needed to arrange large withdraw because of cash on hand and needing the right people at the bank to get more out of the vault. Inconvenient but not unreasonable. Okay, I think what is going on in Australia is more intentional. What is up with Australia? They seem to have self-destructed as a “democracy” and the government has turned on the now unarmed citizenry. Are Australians going to accept this?
There are people who will tail you when you come out of a bank, they can stick a tag on your car while you’re inside and track you. Then if you stop somewhere, they break into your car and get the money.
I always make it a rule that if you withdraw money from the bank, you go straight home and bring the money inside right away. Never stop anywhere else on the way home.
People have said the meaningless tripe for years but now cash soon to actually be King. Think of the stuff that will draw cash and what kind of discounts you will get when every digital transaction is sent along to the IRS to F*** you and the seller over.

What BS. What is the risk? A guy shows up with a dull knife* DEMANDING all the money from a bank. I can see it now: “Everyone on the ground, I have a dull knife!!!!”. Just doesn’t pass the smell test.
*Guns are long gone and decent knives are hard to get in the UK, so I suspect the same for Australia”
