In the wake of the Supreme Court's landmark ruling on affirmative action, a group representing black students has filed a new lawsuit targeting legacy admissions.
According to the Associated Press:
WASHINGTON (AP) — A civil rights group is challenging legacy admissions at Harvard University, saying the practice discriminates against students of color by giving an unfair boost to the mostly white children of alumni.
The practice of giving priority to the children of alumni has faced growing pushback in the wake of last week’s Supreme Court’s decision ending affirmative action in higher education. The NAACP added its weight behind the effort on Monday, asking more than 1,500 colleges and universities to even the playing field in admissions, including by ending legacy admissions.
The civil rights complaint was filed Monday by Lawyers for Civil Rights, a nonprofit based in Boston, on behalf of Black and Latino community groups in New England, alleging that Harvard’s admissions system violates the Civil Rights Act.
That's interesting stuff, given that 70% of legacy admits at Harvard are white, and 30% are not white. Looking at the Obama kids on that one.
To read the lawsuit, it would suggest that were Harvard to dump its legacy admissions, many more black students of merit might be admitted.
But actually, it might just be white and Asian-American students of merit who are admitted, provided the admissions process stays colorblind.
White students from non-legacy families have an insignificant chance of getting into Harvard owing to most of the "white" slots, such as the system has been, being filled by legacy students, who number 43% of all admissions.

My father and grandfather were both Harvard alumni. My classmates couldn’t believe I didn’t apply. Harvard didn’t offer the major I chose to pursue and my father said I could get a better education somewhere else.

What is the problem with legacy admissions at PRIVATE schools? Isn’t this the same as companies offering discounts to returning customers? Discounts to members, which might be similar to donors?
My father and grandfather also graduated from Harvard. I never even thought about going there. I followed my sisters to a smaller private school in the Midwest.

And that will raise tuition across the board, because you know they won’t slash paychecks or bureaucratic posts.
That is the only reason I disagree with doing away with Legacies.
I have no problem with them going after legacies. That system was always bullshit.
Legacy also favors all the descendants of affirmative action kids that were admitted in the last 50 years.
The real issue is that Harvard will become undesirable once the student population sinks under 50% white. Even minorities will shun it. Nobody wants to apply or teach at a US school that is comprised mostly of Asians and Indians. This is the hidden agenda that the faux woke administrators enforce but they can’t say it so they hide behind legacy and a smattering of AA admits.
In 2002 my smart and determined daughter was denied admission to Notre Dame. At least 5 ppl in her class applied there and the only one chosen was a double legacy “party girl” with average SAT scores and grades while my daughter graduated in the top 5% in her high school. Now I’m glad she wasn’t chosen because it would have bankrupted our family and UND stopped being Catholic long ago.
They’re right about this. There’s no question it does.
The problem is that whether they’re private or public, they accept government money. If they don’t want to be subject to federal laws about who they admit, they need to not accept any federal money - like Hillsdale College for example.
How big is Harvard’s endowment? $51 billion I believe.
They don’t need to raise tuition. The interest on that alone would more than pay for everything.
You can bet your shorts they still will rqise tuition, and use dropping donations as an excuse. As mentioned, none of the bloat will be dealt with, and will probably still be expanded until people stop attending. A Diploma from Harvard is worth bupkiss now, anyway.
Besides, smaller colleges with much smaller endowments also have legacy programs, and that is where the damage will be done.
Well, Section 8, medicaid, food stamps and free education hurt me growing up as I didn’t get it because of my skin color and very often did without.
But, I managed and grew from that.
Historically black colleges probably have legacy admissions too.
This is good; there is another group that gets very high admission scores, but; it’s their culture to cheat in every possible way. Let’s go after them. Oh, and maybe we could target ‘affirmative action’ hires at colleges & universities. They don’t belong there as they are unqualified.
