Republicans are split on whether their presidential contenders should embrace a federal 15-week ban on abortion as the party tries to find its footing on the issue going into 2024.
In a radio ad released Thursday in Iowa, Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) vowed to back a national 15-week ban on the procedure. That ad followed a call last week from former Vice President Mike Pence, who urged the other candidates to embrace a federal 15-week ban.

Stop using federal debt as a way to nationalize local decisions.
And place a time limit on Presidential Executive Orders; one year sounds about right.
They’re trying to make sure they stay the minority party.
I was thrilled when Roe v Wade was overturned.
I confess, I haven’t paid a lot of attention to the specifics afterwards, so I get confused.
I thought the great thing of Dobbs was that the issue had been taken away from the federal government and given to the states to decide. Since the Constitution does not discuss it, it then becomes a 10th Amendment situation, and MA can pass some laws, and Alabama can pass other laws. Seems to me that this is how things should be.
But the GOP seems to really want to return this to the hands of the federal government. I do not know why. I don’t see it as a good idea at all.
It whould be no surprise that most all the GOP believes abortion is wrong morally but has more than one view about how best to translate that into secular laws. Meanwhile Dims generally deny any abortion limiting laws are right-, leaving all 100% to what a woman “chooses”.
It's a stupid idea.
Let the States decide
Do people understand what the Hill and other media propaganda pieces are doing here?
They’re trying to get Republicans to accept a false premise.
We won on abortion. It’s back in control of the states, as it always has been prior to 1973.
This is bait. This is pressure to get Republicans to accept abortion or else they’re extremists.
Trump and the RINOs want to protect abortion federally.
Sickening.
How about, and I know this is crazy, WE LEAVE IT TO THE STATES!?
The USSC sent it back to the States. That’s victory at the federal level. Most crimes should not fall under federal purview. Abortion is not an interstate issue.
It all depends on the criteria people used to judge abortion.
There are Freepers on this site , who think that DeSantis is too liberal on abortion , because he signed a six week abortion ban in Florida. In their view we need an absolute ban on abortion.
Other Freepers say, how can we sanction killing babies in California or other liberal states , and that the issue is a life and death issue and we cannot abide liberal abortion laws in any state. Those people favor Federal abortion restrictions.
And other Freepers say, that abortion is not a winning political issue, and over turning Roe vs Wade and letting things be decidedd state by state , is the best we can do as far as reducing abortion in this country.
While the vast majority of people here on Free Republic appear to be pro-life, there is a lot of divided opinion as to what we should do politically about that issue.
One year and/or the end of your presidential term.
If Pence likes it. It’s likely a bad idea.
no it is not.
As Justice Alito’s excellent Dobbs decision points out, abortion isn’t in the US constitution, so any federal abortion ban would only apply to DC and the territories. Scott & Pence have just revealed themselves to be somewhat dimwitted.
The issue is a loser for electing Republicans. It motivates the radical feminists like nothing else.
