Using a gun and having a gun are two different things. Only a fool would approach a complete stranger who has violated the law without having some form of protection.

If people are protesting, I may not like it, but if they
are peaceful it’s Constitutionally protected. If course
this was in France, but it is a general rule that is
reasoned there also.
If there is open rioting and looting, I honestly don’t care
if officers shoot into the rioters as a general rule.
If a vehicle is being used to ram or threaten officers, I’m
not going to defend the driver. Use what force is necessary
to prevent the perp from being successful.
I grow weary of hoodlums on the street thinking they run

It’s time to put that to bed. And if they want to make
new laws about people openly stealing in businesses, I say
give the proprietors permission to use lethal force.

Obviously, the reporter has no knowledge of French “no go zones” where even the police fear for their life because of ethnic neighborhoods where tribal control and justice are.
Do I suspect that this was a serious mistake by the police? Probably. I was in France earlier this year, during riots, protests, and unrest. France has a thing for rebellion.
This time of year all French are thinking of Bastille Day, so rebellion against the government is kind of a national celebration.
I have friends who live in France. She said the 17 year old who was shot had a long criminal record and was a gang member.
The majority of the rioters are migrants from North Africa and muslims. They are not simply rioting against the police. They are looting stores (sound familiar?).
One of her friends is pregnant and was raped by muzzie migrants. Two of her nieces were also raped my muzzie migrants.
This is a culture war and France will lose if they don’t get serious about defending themselves.
