The fatal shooting by police of a 17-year-old boy driving a car in a Paris suburb is the latest in a spate of such deadly incidents in France.
It was the third killing this year during a police traffic stop and followed a record 13 deaths last year.
Most of the victims have been of black or Arab origin, Reuters news agency reports.
What is the legal basis for firing during a traffic stop? By law French police are allowed to shoot in five instances following a 2017 change in the law.
That includes when the driver or occupants of a vehicle ignore an order to stop and are deemed to pose a risk to the officer's life or physical safety, or other people's.

I’m wondering how burning down a library helps a desperate ‘refugee’ (who happens to fly home for the holidays once a year) feed his family...which is what we keep being told is the reason for the riots - poverty.

If people are protesting, I may not like it, but if they
are peaceful it’s Constitutionally protected. If course
this was in France, but it is a general rule that is
reasoned there also.
If there is open rioting and looting, I honestly don’t care
if officers shoot into the rioters as a general rule.
If a vehicle is being used to ram or threaten officers, I’m
not going to defend the driver. Use what force is necessary
to prevent the perp from being successful.
I grow weary of hoodlums on the street thinking they run

It’s time to put that to bed. And if they want to make
new laws about people openly stealing in businesses, I say
give the proprietors permission to use lethal force.
We need to get back to a law abiding society. That’s how
