Air of inevitability builds around Trump’s bid for GOP nomination

Former President Donald Trump is looking like a runaway freight train in the 2024 GOP presidential race, leaving his rivals praying for a derailment.

Mr. Trump, in this third bid for the White House, is far ahead of his closest rival, Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, in national and early state polls and is running circles around the rest of the sprawling field. He has a commanding lead even after losing reelection in 2020 and facing legal problems that threaten to put him behind bars for the rest of his life.

The building air of inevitability around the Trump campaign has his rivals clinging with hope to the example of the early stages of the 2008 Democratic primary. In that race, Hillary Clinton was considered a near shoo-in for the nomination in early July, only to see her lead in the polls evaporate amid the startling rise of then-Sen. Barack Obama.

I think (B) is a function of the parade of duplicitous and/or feckless @ssholes the GOP establishment has trotted out as political candidates in recent decades.

I'll cite George H. W. Bush, Bob Dole, George W. Bush, John McCain, Mitt Romney and Jeb Bush as textbook examples of this.

It has been quite a pathetic group of losers we’ve been stuck with. Most times, it was obvious up front, but in a couple of cases such as the Bush sons we didn’t know for sure until later. I think Trump is shaping up to be another one of those.

Bottom line, NO politicians should ever be trusted, they’re all slimeballs at the core. They should only be measured by what potential good they can do, verses all the negative issues they will be sure to cause.

"And what would you have done to combat CoVID in the face of the continuous onslaught by the media and the Democrats in an election year? He tried to shut down the airline flights into the US and was blocked at every turn. Pretty much anything he tried to do was blocked by the courts."
Good question. Trump allowed himself to be surrounded by backstabbing deep-state politicians like Dr. Fauci (doctor Science) who worked together to destroy him, and did. Hopefully and probably he'll know better if reelected. Like all, an imperfect man, but his instincts were right: I'm for giving him another chance.
