Air of inevitability builds around Trump’s bid for GOP nomination
The Washington Times ^ | Friday, June 30, 2023 | Seth McLaughlin

Former President Donald Trump is looking like a runaway freight train in the 2024 GOP presidential race, leaving his rivals praying for a derailment.

Mr. Trump, in this third bid for the White House, is far ahead of his closest rival, Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, in national and early state polls and is running circles around the rest of the sprawling field. He has a commanding lead even after losing reelection in 2020 and facing legal problems that threaten to put him behind bars for the rest of his life.

The building air of inevitability around the Trump campaign has his rivals clinging with hope to the example of the early stages of the 2008 Democratic primary. In that race, Hillary Clinton was considered a near shoo-in for the nomination in early July, only to see her lead in the polls evaporate amid the startling rise of then-Sen. Barack Obama.

The necessity of obtaining the consent of the governed is so annoying.

Let's call it a nasty name like "populism" and outlaw it.

Of course it has. The prez whose record is lockdowns, big pharma blank checks and letting people die alone in homes and hospitals who gave us mail in ballots on his way out as a big screw you to freedom is very popular. Just like Obama.

With all the nonsense you post here about Trump, did you ever stop and think about why he’s so popular among REPUBLICAN voters?

As his poll numbers get better, the left steps up the false prosecutions and bimbo eruptions, making his numbers go up some more.

It’s not over yet. The left is going all the way with this one. They will do anything at all to stop Trump.

MAGA, and $hit on its detractors.

And what would you have done to combat CoVID in the face of the continuous onslaught by the media and the Democrats in an election year? He tried to shut down the airline flights into the US and was blocked at every turn. Pretty much anything he tried to do was blocked by the courts.

If they really wanted to defeat him they would endorse him.

A good Republican knows that death and taxes are the only things inevitable in the future.

Anyone, Trump included, could have a health event,an accident, a Hillarycide. Pence may be praying that Trump converts to Christianity and his prayer answered.

To be viable as second choice for President, or to be viable for vice-president, or to be viable for a Network contract, a person needs to increase the odds.

And, to feed one’s ego nothing else is needed.

did you ever stop and think about why he’s so popular among REPUBLICAN voters?

1. They think what happened between 2016 and 2020 was all good

2. They think Trump is being unfairly attacked

3. They think "this time" things will be different

I agree on #2, but not enough to think 2020 was all good, or that this time things will be different.

The government likes to rule, completely divorced from the will of the people (except in rare cases where they use massive propaganda and chicanery to “manufacture consent”)

“Populism” is when the people who supposedly hold the power in our republic tell the occupation government they oppose their policies.

I agree the left wants to stop Trump at all costs. That’s why they want him to get the GOP nomination, but be so bloodied up he would be toast in the general election. Nothing generates Democrat turnout more than having Trump on the ballot.

Good input. I’d suggest it also means that: (A) those voters aren’t buying the slop that people like that FR poster are peddling, and (B) they don’t have any confidence in the other GOP competitors in the 2024 field.

Ridiculous and so factually incorrect that you have to be a Democrat or a DeSantis Bushite.

Our election system is set Constitutionally on states making election laws and a Federalist President like Trump has zero authority to impose his own system.

Are you stupid?
