Why Women Will Suffer the Most if the Supreme Court Rules Against Biden's Student Loan Forgiveness Plan
TIME ^ | June 28, 2023 | BY SOLCYRE BURGA

... As millions of borrowers anxiously await a looming Supreme Court opinion that will decide whether President Biden’s student loan forgiveness is constitutional, a subset of that population finds themselves especially eager to hear the news: women. Women hold nearly two-thirds of the country’s student loan debt, owing $929 billion of the $1.54 trillion student debt, according to the American Association of University Women (AAUW).

“That’s a pretty substantial amount of money that women are taking on in many cases to just sort of achieve what men don’t even need to have a degree to achieve,” Gloria L. Blackwell, CEO of AAUW, tells TIME.

Although women make up more than half of the college educated labor force, per the Pew Research Center, women still face barriers to paying off their loans due to the gender wage gap, a lack of generational wealth and gender norms placed on women.

Black women are particularly affected by student loan debt, owing an average of $37,558 compared to the $29,862 white men owe and $31,346 white women owe.

“What we hear from women is oftentimes, ‘I went to grad school because I needed to make up for the gender pay gap.’ Or, ‘I went because I’m a woman of color, and I’m often paid less than my white and male counterparts,’” she tells TIME.

And the lack of familial support faces an additional barrier for borrowers who come from low-income backgrounds. Calazans says that the lack of generational wealth makes it difficult to pay for not only tuition, but also additional costs like books, supplies and transportation. “For a lot of people who don’t come from generational wealth, it is tough because it’s not just tuition, right? It’s a cost of living,” Calazans adds.

“For a lot of people who don’t come from generational wealth”

My Democratic neighbors to the west were told that at 18 they were on their own. Once Mr. Neighbor graduated, their landlord told them to buy a house and explained why they should, and they did.

Suffering for your bad decisions is part of life. Don’t expect those who didn’t make bad decisions to bail you out. Used to be a basic social rule.

I graduated with a BE in Mechanical Engineering in 1989.
YES even back then we were noticing that the Administrator to student ratio was climbing.

Funny how universities raise tuition JUST AS GOVERNEMNT adds more loan money. SCAM, yes in deed. Time to DRAIN the multi-BILLION dollar endowments of universities.

Everyone knew this vote buying scheme would happen once Obama federalized the student loan program.

How much did your new pickup truck cost, Señor?

Considerably more than $37,558 and the interest rate is far more than 4%.

Women have less generational wealth than men????? How does that work?

I paid for my student loans by working multiple jobs and creating my own business.

Shame on those guaranteeing these insane loans to students getting inane degrees, that have no hope of being paid back in any kind of reasonable timeframe.

But we already knew the government is shameless, and the institutions that are milking it as well.

Interesting. I paid for my college classes through the Army and used Mastercard for books and fees, paid off monthly.

When my folks divorced, my Mom, who had never worked outside of the home, was 40 and needed to support herself. She went to school for 18 months to become an X-Ray Tech - and *I* loaned her the money to do so. She got a great job with a local hospital and worked for them until she was in her 60’s. She wanted to retire sooner, but they kept throwing more MONEY at her, LOL! She paid me back a little bit every month and was so proud of her accomplishments - as she should have been. She worked harder than any co-ed does today, that’s for sure!

No sympathy from me to any of these idiots who go deeply into debt for a useless degree.

Join the Military. Join the Trades. Take an Apprenticeship. Earn a degree from a Technical College. Learn to repair or build things. Those kinds of careers ARE out there. Live at HOME while you go to school and work while you study.

If two female schlubs from Wisconsin can end up with useful, income-generating degrees, anyone can do it.

Nothing mysterious about it. Its just a con game. Schools are awash in cash which is embezzled legally by overpaid administrators.

Lemme guess, “women’s studies” majors? This of course renders them unemployable. Thus they’ll never pay back their student loans.

Students loans became a huge scam under Barak Obama. He loosened the rules on student loan lending and he liberalized the definition of “academic institution” eligible to receive student loan support in such a way they fly by night and even totally fraudulent entities became eligible in teh student loan program. .

This loosening gave rise to substantial fraud in the student loan system, both on the side of students and the rise of fly by night “trade schools” teaching things like hair extension and nail veneers.

A lot of “students” treated student loans as back door reparations and simply used the loans to pay for living expenses without actually obtaining any jobs skills.

Some of the money on these non performing loans is outright fraud to fictitious students and “schools” who do not even exist.

It's kind of like the 750 New Orelans police officers who never existed except on paper and fake bank accounts.

It's the Democrat way.

Erasing non performing student debt to cover up the fraud and abuses of the student loan program under Obama is one of the goals of Biden's plan.

I want the money I paid to go to college. 4 years of undergraduate and 3 more for the PhD. I worked, saved and paid it back over the next 9 years.

The reason that worked out for me was, I PICKED A USEFUL AND NEEDED MAJOR. What the hell do you do with a sociology or a (Pick favorite topic) studies degree.

Oh, but I forgot, These losers are entitled and I am not being old, male, and white. I was stupid enough that I thought working hard at tough job would get me ahead.

I had read a study back in the 1980’s, that in the 1940’s, professors spent 15 hours a week in the classroom. 40 years later, that was down to 5. I’m guessing it’s not a whole lot lower now.
