Titan sub debris field: Parts of missing sub's cover found, expert says
BBC ^ | 6.22.2023

Debris has been found in the search for the missing Titan submersible, reportedly including parts of its outside cover. Dive expert David Mearns told the BBC the president of the Explorers Club - which is connected to the diving and rescue community - says the debris includes "a landing frame and a rear cover from the submersible". The US Coast Guard earlier confirmed a "debris field" had been found within the search area. It was located by a remote-controlled underwater search vehicle (ROV) near the wreck of the Titanic. A US Coast Guard news conference is scheduled for 1500 EST (1900 GMT) on Thursday afternoon. The Titan vessel went missing in a remote area of the North Atlantic on Sunday with a four-day oxygen supply for its crew of five.

Some experts have speculated that it could have suffered a catastrophic implosion as a result of a hull failure. The minivan-sized submersible was owned and operated by the private company OceanGate Expeditions. The firm's co-founder, Guillermo Söhnlein, told the BBC that he believes there may have been an "instantaneous implosion" of the craft. "If that's what happened, that's what would have happened four days ago," he said.

Your kidding us, right?

The CEO was bragging about how they didn’t want any over 50 old white men working on it because they were not inspirational.

He also fired the old white dude who raised serious and legitimate concerns about safety.

build more cheap tin cans for rich stupid tourists to visit the crash sight

Was this vessel under-engineered for ocean-going operations? Perhaps. But such a trip was no different than some of the earliest explorers who set out to sea, partly in search for riches, but also for the sake of exploration. That's a brave and noble thing.

We ought to stop the derisive comments about who these passengers were, or how much money they had. If they died, they did doing something they may eventually help us learn more about our place on this planet.

In any case, your comments sound petty and jealous of them because they had more money than you. At one time on FR, we would've confused you with someone that stumbled into this forum from the Democrat Underground or some other socialist site.

p.s. It's a crash "site," not "sight."

The CEO of the company (who was also the pilot of the craft) said that he deliberately hired only young diverse college graduates because he didn’t want to see any 50 year old white guys designing his submersible.

Went woke, sub broke.

If any of them had this Rolex designed to withstand depths down to the Marianas Trench maybe it survived. Granted this watch is a bit top heavy and um large but it might be there.

I don’t really think there's any profound lesson to be learned here, other than "situations transpire." That, and maybe make some improvements in design. People are always going to want to explore, and sometimes things happen.

I would say there is definitely a profound lesson to be learned here: Avoid complacency, and take safety seriously.

There's always going to be risks in any kind of venture to a place that is inhospitable to humans, but the key is to avoid getting complacent about these risks.

This is a lesson that should have been learned by NASA after the Challenger explosion in 1986. One of the things that was obvious about the space shuttle program after that incident was that NASA had become very complacent about the risks of space travel. By the time 1986 rolled around, the agency was more concerned about diversity and "civilianizing" the crews of these missions -- to the point where the space shuttle was viewed as seriously as you'd oversee a school bus.

The strongest evidence of this came out more than 18 months later when NASA restarted the shuttle missions and military payloads were given top priority over civilian research. All interest in diversity went out the window, and for several years the shuttle crews were comprised almost entirely of white men.

I would assume you are correct..

PH Nargeolet was the underwater director of RMS Titanic inc who has salvage rights to the wreck. The same group that retrieved part of the Titanic’s hull and put it on display in Las Vegas.

It is my opinion only that the wreck site is a place that should not be pillaged for profit.

“I’m at least glad the people died quickly in a likely instantaneous implosion, rather than running out of oxygen in the dark at the bottom of the sea. May God bless them all.”

Agreed!

"...and your touch may insure that it won’t be around as long as it could have been."

It's survived since it was brought up in 1998, despite my having touched it. Maybe they should have just left it on the bottom of the sea according to your line of thinking. It's been on display at the Titanic museum in Las Vegas for years now. It'll be around far longer than you or I will be.

That's like needing a watch that can withstand the temperatures on the Sun.

What does it have to do with woke? His whole company was about woke. He made sure everyone knew he would not be hiring 50 year old white guys with former Navy sub service.. etc.
He said they were “uninspiring”.

Turns out that decades of experience in Navy submersibles and in engineering and design matter. Woke thinking cause him to show disdain for experts and to build his own low quality experimental with used parts. And his woke “superior” mentality got him and four others killed.
