Was this vessel under-engineered for ocean-going operations? Perhaps. But such a trip was no different than some of the earliest explorers who set out to sea, partly in search for riches, but also for the sake of exploration. That's a brave and noble thing.
We ought to stop the derisive comments about who these passengers were, or how much money they had. If they died, they did doing something they may eventually help us learn more about our place on this planet.
In any case, your comments sound petty and jealous of them because they had more money than you. At one time on FR, we would've confused you with someone that stumbled into this forum from the Democrat Underground or some other socialist site.
p.s. It's a crash "site," not "sight."
I would say there is a huge difference between terrestrial exploration and "gratuitous" exploration in places where humans can't survive under normal conditions -- I'd include outer space, the ocean floor, and extremely high elevations in thin air as examples of this.
I once served on a corporate board with a former astronaut who was a strong advocate of continuous space exploration. He was bemused about my skepticism about travel to the moon, other planets, etc. He asked me a question commonly heard in these conversations: "What would happen if Christopher Columbus landed in North America, and then nobody ever came after him?"
My answer to that question is always the same: "If Columbus landed in North America and found that there was no oxygen here, I'm pretty sure nobody in Europe would have bothered coming over here again."
Stop with the sanctimonious BS
I have plenty of money and even more important more intelligence than they do and I’m *alive*
Shove it up your butt with this “exploration” BS from a bunch of bored billionaires with nothing to do but take chances in a cheap tin can for absolutely nothing
They’re dead because they were too busy being extravagant with tons of money they could actually use to do good
They’re no different than Jeff bozos and his dozens of mansions and yachts.
You couldn’t put me enough money to get in that tin can or take care of half of the crap they feel compelled to accumulate
Maybe you’re just jealous of me being happy without all their crap?!
PS - all their money didn’t help them one single bit. In fact it KILLED them
