Titan sub debris field: Parts of missing sub's cover found, expert says
BBC ^ | 6.22.2023

Debris has been found in the search for the missing Titan submersible, reportedly including parts of its outside cover. Dive expert David Mearns told the BBC the president of the Explorers Club - which is connected to the diving and rescue community - says the debris includes "a landing frame and a rear cover from the submersible". The US Coast Guard earlier confirmed a "debris field" had been found within the search area. It was located by a remote-controlled underwater search vehicle (ROV) near the wreck of the Titanic. A US Coast Guard news conference is scheduled for 1500 EST (1900 GMT) on Thursday afternoon. The Titan vessel went missing in a remote area of the North Atlantic on Sunday with a four-day oxygen supply for its crew of five.

Some experts have speculated that it could have suffered a catastrophic implosion as a result of a hull failure. The minivan-sized submersible was owned and operated by the private company OceanGate Expeditions. The firm's co-founder, Guillermo Söhnlein, told the BBC that he believes there may have been an "instantaneous implosion" of the craft. "If that's what happened, that's what would have happened four days ago," he said.

Sounds pretty cool, though I can’t see the functionality of a watch engineered for a depth greater than Mike Nelson could dive.

Perhaps one could strap that watch on the outside of some sort of pressure suit...

But Im pretty sure i read about them touting their structure health monitoring in real time.

When the composite is overworked, typically the fibers in the higher stress areas and laminates will begin to fail (fracture). Kinda like a multi stranded cable or string fraying. As enough fibers fail, the stress and associated strain (stretch) increases on the remaining fibers. This continues until a point is reached at which the remaining fibers and matrix can not bear the load any longer and the remaining structure dramatically fails in a brittle manner in an instant.

Wow. And the sad thing is, had this lib lived, he STILL wouldn’t have learned. Liberalism is a mental illness, we have said it many times here on FR.

The pressure chamber has not yet been found. But the titanium end caps of the pressure chamber have been found, along with the outer frame, and the tail cone cover.

Do you suppose that the crew’s cell phones and laptops survived, or were they obliterated?

I just hope they didn’t damage the Titanic wreck.

Their structural health system was questionable per the whistleblower lawsuit that was filed in 2018, IIRC. See the cites in the linked article below.

Per the presser, the wreckage is 1600 feet away from any Titanic artifact.

In that they have found the titanium end caps, can they tell if the viewport is shattered?

I wonder if any of the IPhones survived the implosion?

A Timex watch was spotted in the debris field. It was still tickin'.

Unless it buried itself in the seabed, they should be able to see any large damage/failures in the viewport... pics/vid should hopefully be released soon.

Stop with the sanctimonious BS

I have plenty of money and even more important more intelligence than they do and I’m *alive*

Shove it up your butt with this “exploration” BS from a bunch of bored billionaires with nothing to do but take chances in a cheap tin can for absolutely nothing

I'm always amazed when people on FR are clearly unaware of the news on FR.

They’re dead because they were too busy being extravagant with tons of money they could actually use to do good

They’re no different than Jeff bozos and his dozens of mansions and yachts.

You couldn’t put me enough money to get in that tin can or take care of half of the crap they feel compelled to accumulate

Maybe you’re just jealous of me being happy without all their crap?!

PS - all their money didn’t help them one single bit. In fact it KILLED them

Tx. I hope that the front and rear end bells (semi-spherical titanium caps that attached to the front and rear titanium rings (via flange bolts) . . . can be recovered. Those 2 pieces should tell a lot of the story.
