As Canada hurtles towards its worst wildfire season in history, a conspiracy theory has taken off online claiming environmentalists intentionally set some of the blazes.
"I bet a good portion of the wildfires raging across the country were started by green terrorists who want to give their climate change campaign a little boost," Maxime Bernier, a former foreign minister-turned fringe party leader, said in a June 5 tweet.
So far in 2023, Canada has seen larger wildfires than any previous year at this point in the season, with more than three million hectares burned. Tens of thousands of people have evacuated as a result.
On TikTok, a video already viewed almost 20,000 times, claims the fires in Nova Scotia were set "on purpose to push a climate change agenda."
One article speculates that since 90 percent of Alberta's fires could be "human-caused," there is a possibility that "ecoterrorists" may be behind them.
As wildfires spread in Quebec, some questioned how all the blazes could have started on the same day. One Facebook video with more than one million views blames "a terrorist attack" for the flames.
But Karine Pelletier from the province's Forest Fire Protection Agency said the causes are still under investigation.
"There are a lot which are caused by humans, but these are almost always accidents," she said, noting that recent lightning strikes were to blame for many of Quebec’s wildfires.
Alberta Wildfire told AFP that unless lightning is involved, a blaze is classified as human-caused. This does not exclusively mean arson.
"It could be related to general causes, including agriculture, forest industry, powerlines, or oil and gas industry, railroad or residential wildfires," said spokeswoman Melissa.
Nova Scotia officials have also said they are still investigating the origins of the province’s fires, which are presumed to be human-caoused.

Claims this is to force people into “15 minute cities”.
I saw satellite footage show the start of the fires in Canada. And it showed that many fires started at exactly the same time in many places all at once. This is definitely a real conspiracy.
There are many reasons why they might do this. A slightly more odd one came to my mind. If an invasion was about to take place then you would not want people hiding in the woods. I know that sounds a bit kooky, but I like brainstorming.

Who knows. But this is Canada. I doubt that they are being proactive with their forest management like they used to be like back in the old days. I’m not a Canadian and I do not work in the logging industry so I may be mistaken.
The fires in the US Northwest and CA were eco terrorism as well. In WA State, much of the ecoterrorism was inspired by the Canadian anti-oil sands activists. As a matter of fact, the two women who were convicted of eco terrorism charges were charged on the basis of belonging to the Canadian group. Obama made it impossible to bring terrorism charges against an American without ties and contacts with foreign groups.
We suffered with the smoke from Canadian fires for several years before the fires started here, too. We had a couple of years of bad fires until Jay Inslee the very Leftwing Governor said enough and took back control of the forests and the fires from the federal government and ended it all. …except the smoke from the Canadian fires and the CA fires.
They claimed the fires were supposed to be a controlled burn, done for fighting the fires not starting them, except that fire fighting efforts are done in January, not June. The wild fires in the Us West were arson and so are the Canadian fires. It isn’t a conspiracy.
Bernier is a mainstream center-right Conservative. The author must be a deranged Stalinazi fringer.
I actually saw a women who was some kind of official in Canada saying that if they would let the loggers do their job then the forests would cleared of the old growth, and new trees planted. Reducing fires. So I assume the the loggers are mostly hog tied these days.
