Russia is spending surprisingly little on its war on Ukraine
Insider ^ | Jun 1, 2023 | Phil Rosen

The direct fiscal cost of the war — spending on soldiers and machines — is estimated to be about 3% of Russia's GDP, or roughly $67 billion a year, according to the report.

By historical standards, the current war pales in comparison. The Soviet Union during World War II, for example, spent about 61% of GDP, and the US at the same time put about 50% of its GDP toward the conflict.

...Printing additional cash to fund the war would push inflation higher and weigh on Russia's citizens. Saddling banks with war debt could do the same, and both options in turn could harm Vladimir Putin's political aims.

The US Dollar had been worth about 70 to 78 Russian Rubbles before the war. Then the Rubble dropped in value very quickly reaching a peak of 160 Rubbles per Dollar in a few days. Then is came roaring back the other way and got stronger than its pre-war price for a few months around 54 to 65 Rubbles per Dollar. Around the start of 2023 the Rubble started doing a bit worse and is now around 80 Rubbles per dollar.

So yeah, it seems the war did not hurt them as much as anticipated or reported.

The Russians know this is a war of attrition and a marathon.

They are well aware that you cannot utilize all your forces as this will be a longer campaign and you need to rotate folks in and out.

They know they have other contingencies / threats, and they cannot burn certain resources or commit more than a certain troop level to Ukraine.

Nothing has ever stopped a Russian leader from throwing bodies at its enemies. With varying degrees of success. They do best, however when their backs are against the wall. As this is being fought on foreign soil they’re doing a mediocre job.

“”The Russians know this is a war of attrition and a marathon.””

Just the opposite, they thought it would be simple and quick, which is why they were already lining up choice apartments in Kyiv before the attack.

Sorry, not being a “Zeeper”. Just noting how the Red Army has historically performed. I have no dog in this fight, so please don’t assume that I do.

But Brandon imposed all these severe sanctions. Are you telling me they didn’t work?

The Russians know this is a war of attrition and a marathon "Special Military Operation" that will be over within WEEKS.

Because Putin said so!

good luck continuing that meme

I'm not the one who coined the phrase "Special Military Operation," or caused it to proliferate in the Internet.

Lil' Putin did that all himself!

It's normal in war for an attacking force to suffer many more casualties than well-prepared defenders, and we've seen this in Bakhmut, Ukraine.
For nine months, Zelenskyy fought a defensive battle, forcing the Russians to attack over and over, just to gain a few more yards of Ukrainian territory.

The US estimates invading Russians suffered 100,000 casualties at Bakhmut, including 20,000 killed in action, or about five times the number of defending Ukrainian casualties.

This means Russians have suffered something like 1,000 casualties for every square mile of Bakhmut they took.

Judging from several sites I read tonight, we will soon have a new meme, “Belgorod People’s Republic.” The Russsian rebels have scheduled a people’s referendum there this Sunday. Enjoy Putin, does the shoe fit on the other foot??

A strike to alexander busek: "You are the one promulgating the loser meme, loser."

For over a year now, Russians have acted like losers, panicking, fleeing, abandoning their tanks, etc. in the face of well-planned Ukrainian offensives, notably at Kiev, Kharkiv and Kherson.
In those battles, Ukrainian liberated almost half of the total area Russians had taken in February & March 2022.

Now we may be seeing a new Ukrainian offensive, perhaps to retake Mariupol, but in this case it's the Russians who've had many months to prepare dug-in defenses, and the Ukrainians in attack mode.

Time will tell if Ukraine's superior motivation, training, equipment and tactics prove enough to overcome the Russians' natural advantage in well prepared defensive positions.

No they don’t know that. It’ll get you thrown in jail in Russia if you use the term “War” to describe this “Special Military Operation”. They never intended for this “Special Military Operation” to last as long as it has. Some massive meatgrinders like Bakhmut have shown why War is such a horrible way to solve problems and why anyone who starts one will soon find out that they don’t get to decide when it ends. Russia never thought that Ukraine would be fully mobilized as a country for War like has happened. And what Ukraine doesn’t realize very well is that Russia is far from fully engaged in this conflict. If they poke Moscow/Putin too much then they risk escalation on the Russian side to be fully mobilized and engaged in All Out War where every possible weapon that anyone could think of using will be utilized by Russia.

I sincerely hope that Russia doesn’t go “All Out War”. There’s no telling where that would take this conflict if that were to happen. What would be better is to get the Russians and Ukrainians to have peace talks ASAP and to keep having them & for us to get some independent peacekeepers put into all of the disputed areas to have this conflict put on ice & give cooler heads a chance to prevail.

If Russia is only 3% “in” then it’s obvious that Ukraine cannot win unless Russia gives up. That’s why the outcome of this War for Ukraine depends upon them not provoking Russia into going “All Out War”. I know this sucks for anyone peace-loving and in favor of the Rule of Law & real freedom & human rights. But, that’s the situation now.
