Former President Donald Trump is up double digits against Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) in a hypothetical 2024 presidential primary matchup, a recently released Florida Atlantic University/Mainstreet Research survey found.

The survey, taken between April 13 and 14, 2023, found 59 percent of registered Republicans choose Trump as their nominee of choice, while 31 percent choose DeSantis, giving Trump a 28-point advantage:

2024 Florida Republican Primary:

Trump 59% (+28)
DeSantis 31%

Further, the survey found 87 percent of registered Republican voters in Florida at least somewhat support Trump in the 2024 primary, despite looming legal woes.

More per Florida Atlantic University (FAU):

However, the poll reveals regional and generational gaps among Republican voters. Trump wins decisively against DeSantis in the Tampa Bay area (69 percent for Trump vs. 22 percent for DeSantis); in southwest Florida (80 percent for Trump vs. 7 percent for DeSantis); and in Palm Beach County (65 percent for Trump vs. 33 percent for DeSantis). However, in northwest Florida, Trump and DeSantis tie with 43 percent each. As for the generational gap, Trump wins 66 percent of support among voters who are 50 to 64 years old, while his support among younger voters (18 to 34) is 40 percent.

Luzmarina Garcia, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Political Science at FAU, noted that none of the other GOP candidates are polling close to Trump or DeSantis, concluding that it looks like “a two-man race.”

“However, even this early in the race, the vast majority of Republican respondents indicated that they had made up their minds for a presidential candidate,” Garcia observed.

As is true in other parts of the country, Florida Republicans listed the economy as the most important area of concern, followed by immigration.

In July 2015, which is comparatively still two months away from this cycle, Trump was bragging about being at 12% in the polls and Jeb! was leading a crowded field with 19%. At that point, for that election, Trump was right, but he was behind at this point. In May 2015, which is where we are... he was at like 3% and still hadn’t declared for another month.

You know who was declaring victory in May 2015 though... Hillary.

Maybe we let things shake out over the next year and a half and see where they land before declaring victory.

I’m old enough to remember a “super-conservative” Governor of a large state, who was a Yale grad, who was elected President, who played a major part in ushering in the communist debacle that we see today.

George W. Bush says “Hi!” They fake it ‘til they make it.

On Sunday morning, I watched about five minutes of DeSantis campaign clips in Iowa.

I was really impressed.

He was completely relaxed, friendly, likable, articulate, and well organized.

For the very first time, I am prepared to say that DeSantis has a 50-50 chance of winning the White House in November 2024.

Can DeSantis beat Trump in the GOP primary?

As of today, the nomination looks out of reach for DeSantis in 2024.

The Trump brand hasn’t won since 2016. Lost in 2018, 2020, 2021, and 2022. He’s probably the one guy who can lose to Dementia Joe.

“double digits” is such a cute and fuzzy way for the NeverTrump quislings to describe a 28 point gap.

But he let Deep State handlers get into his head and he made some bad decisions which show that he is a consummate politician - willing to break trusts for his own personal gain...if he had waited until 2028, he’d probably have a solid shot - but now he may never have a shot...

“Florida was supposed to be his springboard to the presidency.”

DeSantis is doing great for Florida. Loving every week the new laws passed that are helping us. However, I think it is a terrible decision to challenge Trump. He might have made a great VP choice. To win a future election, a candidate must often start in a prior election to gain contacts, support, and funding, to build a war chest. I thought he might be doing that, but I think I am wrong.
