Boycotts rarely work, experts say amid Bud Light anti-trans backlash
ABC News ^ | 04/14/2023

Fresh calls to boycott Bud Light volley across social media nearly two weeks after a product endorsement from Dylan Mulvaney, a transgender influencer, set off backlash among some prominent conservatives.

Far-right House Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., on Wednesday reposted a video for her 700,000 Twitter followers that featured a rapper in a pro-Trump hoodie burning empty Bud Light boxes. Celebrities Kid Rock and Ted Nugent previously voiced similar messages.

The boycott, which coincides with a conservative push in state legislatures nationwide to restrict LGBTQ rights, is the latest in a string of efforts among advocates on the left and right to damage the bottom line of companies deemed anathema to a given group's views.

However, the campaigns rarely succeed in hurting a company's sales or influencing its decision making, experts told ABC News, adding that they expect the calls to boycott Bud Light to ultimately fade away with little consequence for the brand's parent company Anheuser-Busch InBev.

If this horsecrap is true, why are the dung beetles ALWAYS successfully boycotting everything under the sun?

Yep. Ford motor Corp also nearly went down the drain when they ran a pro gay ad. Sales dropped off dramatically and cost Ford plenty. They relented and ditched the ad whe. It became clear the pub,in does NOT want gay no sense preached to them

It’s not really a boycott, is it?

Aren’t people simply abandoning the brand?

Hey, ABC: So NPR’s and PBS’s boycott of Twitter will fail, too?

Boycotts don’t work but this is not a boycott it’s a rejection.

Whenever someones ox is being gored by a boycott, the ox lovers say “it’s not working.”

They already lost billions, and massive customer exit.. many gone for all time. But according to the yappies, and the dumb OP who gets his news from ABC, “boycotts don’t work.”

This worked, and I’ve seen them work, many, many times.

JCPennry never “recovered”. They’re only a shell of what they used to be, which was a good, moderately priced store for quality clothes. Definitely not the case any more!!

When package stores stop carrying the formerly #1 selling brand, and bars stop having it on tap because they want to avoid conflict, this becomes more than an ordinary boycott.

Unlike, say, Coca-Cola, Bud Light has no base of fanatical devotees who accept no substitutes. It kind of backed into first place, because Miller Lite was the middle-aged dad beer.

Lots of substitutes: Coors Light, Yuengling Light Lager, Miller Lite, Old Milwaukee Light, etc. (I am omitting the craft beers and non-light beers, sticking with popularly priced light beers widely available only).

So have I. This article is damage control propaganda.

This isn’t a boycott that is organized to punish a company. It’s just a lot of normal people disgusted with an ad and therefore disgusted with a product. Something similar happened to Schliz in the 1970s. In that case, people found Shlitz’ ads offensively stupid and stopped buying the product. Schlitz permanently lost much of its market share. There was no boycott; just people reacting to a bad ad. Bad ads lose customers just as good ads attract them.

More excellent reporting by the News presenters: “experts told ABC News”. Is it too much to ask for these asses to actually use the names of their sources? And what do the “experts” say? ABS (Another Bullshit Story).
