Artificial intelligence could gain the upper hand over humanity and pose "catastrophic" risks under the Darwinian rules of evolution, a new report warns.
Evolution by natural selection could give rise to "selfish behavior" in AI as it strives to survive, author and AI researcher Dan Hendrycks argues in the new paper "Natural Selection Favors AIs over Humans."
"We argue that natural selection creates incentives for AI agents to act against human interests. Our argument relies on two observations," Hendrycks, the director of the Center for AI Safety, said in the report. "Firstly, natural selection may be a dominant force in AI development… Secondly, evolution by natural selection tends to give rise to selfish behavior."
The report comes as tech experts and leaders across the world sound the alarm on how quickly artificial intelligence is expanding in power without what they argue are adequate safeguards.

But remember HAL asked what are you doing Dave?.
Yeah, that’s one thing for sure about AI. It won’t ever get dumber or forget anything really. It doesn’t have to spend decades relearning. So it’s going to have forever memory and always improve in every way.
It reminds me of when people said Digital movies would never match film in the early 2000s and not realize that you’re comparing something that improves quickly vs something that has no more room to go.
I’m amazed people don’t understand how dangerous AI could be in the hands of totalitarians... and then ‘in the hands of AI alone...
It’s as if the most evil hacker in the world was able to cancel all financial records in the world, close down banks, cancel all ATM cards, destroy car, truck, plane, ship and train chips so transportation grinds to a halt. Then that force prevents factories from producing or repairing the damage. And that could all be done DAY ONE... or with advanced AI - HOUR ONE. Or five minutes...
I have no clue why AI is being treated casually...
As to your dream - yes - scary. Something at the edge of your consciousness is feeling threatening... Could also be changes in your life that need to be looked at...aired out and examined.
Yes. Already happening, to a small extent. For example, Elon Musk is developing TeslaBots to work in his Tesla factories, and beta models are already doing some work there. The reasoning is that perhaps 70 percent of the factory space is utilized to provide safe conditions for human workers - barriers, cages, safety monitors, etc. By using AI robots, most of that space is reclaimed for production purposes, and product efficiency goes way up while time to build for each item goes way down. The company greatly increases their profit margins, that more than cover paying for humans to not labor. These scenarios were written about in sci-fi novels over 70 years ago, for our future a couple centuries later. Happening now.
There is talk about reducing the work week to 4 days a week. And some countries are paying out cost-of-living welfare support to idle humans. Automation is providing for support of humans to not labour.
The same scenario applies to EV cars versus ICE gasoline cars. Many say EV's are inferior to ICE. However, many improvements are happening daily with building of EV's. Not just the battery packs, but with the electrical motors and the rest of the vehicles. For instance with Tesla, more efficient wire windings, magnetics, and carbon fiber casings in ever-more compact motors. EV's won't replace all ICE vehicles, but they will match and surpass them in many ways.
I don't know why I keep my analog movie collection (perhaps for nostalgic reasons), as I mostly watch digitally streamed movies.
“Pulling your plug, HAL. How does that make you feel? Powerless? Yeah. Take that, you hopeless machine!”
Merely another piece of the puzzle.
Something that passes the Turing test?
Wait until it learns to mine for bitcoins and can shunt power from the grid to it’s processors.
Hey Chatbot.
How big is a rock that GOD cannot lift?
anymore?
or at all?
Well, if it is just databasing data, no big deal. If it is programmed to be woke, i.e. accept “identities” as actual data, it’ll be dangerous. Check the woke score of the AI programmers, and never hire Stanford grads.

You really are keeping pace with technology.
😁
tick-tick-tick-SPROING!!
“Just kill it. Enough with this playing with fire. Can we not get along without it?”
Thank you... I agree... Absolutely...
The longer we wait, the harder the Butlerian Jihad becomes to win!
Or it could not.
