All new vehicles become used cars and trucks once they're sold.
It's an obvious statement, but one that needs to be laid out to explain the root cause for ongoing inventory and pricing issues in the U.S. used vehicle market, which has been a barometer for the country's inflation levels.
During the onset of the coronavirus pandemic in early 2020, automakers shuttered factories for weeks to stop the spread of Covid-19. It was an unprecedented action that eventually led to additional supply chain problems, such as an ongoing semiconductor chip shortage, causing factories to cease production again for weeks, if not months, at a time in recent years.

Regardless, manual transmissions in new cars is very rare.
My last two cars have been 2008/2009 Mercedes Benz E350s. I’ve gotten close to 400,000 miles out of them so far. All of my next cars will be 2008/2009 Mercedes Benz E350s. I will not comply with the gubmint monitoring systems.
That was the plan all along ... and "15 days to flatten the curve" was the tipoff to the plan.
I got my old beater in 2006 for $5000 at a used dealer lot. Today, I see the same make model and year for over $8000. I was looking at used small pickups and 20 year old Toyota Tacomas are over $10k. We can really thank Obama’s cash for clunkers to get it all messed up.
“Regardless, manual transmissions in new cars is very rare.”
Unfortunately. Last info I had it was approaching <5%, and it was mostly two door sports/muscle cars. Never saw one in an SUV or similar vehicles which are replacing sedans. Not sure auto makers would offer one in an EV - they have enough problems with batteries.
“I have my doubts about the strategy of keeping cars for 30+ years.
What happens when you can’t get repair parts anymore?”
That’s why I own classic Chevies. There is a huge aftermarket for parts.Zero parts problems for my 67 Camaro or 57 Bel Air.
Or like my 49 Chevy pickup. It is hard to get parts for the rear end. So I will just swap it out to a modern one from the 2000s. I can get one for under $400.
A manual transmission would make no sense in an EV.
I was just drooling over the
Ford 7.3 Gasser.
.
Will it fit my 2019 F250???
.
GODZILLA !
The mechanical diesels run fine on straight fryer oil as long as it’s filtered and run through a centrifugal filter.
A bit of poking around reveals that Tesla cars, at least, don't HAVE a transmission in the traditional sense. The motor seems to be directly connected to the wheels.

That’s and competition is the free market.

I can’t help but think that Hussein’s “Cash For Clunkers” program might have something to do with this. Those beautiful cars being destroyed ... shameful. They weren’t all “clunkers”.
So, unless something TRULY serious goes wrong, the “used car” I already own is the best used car I could buy anywhere, and no hugely increased monthly payments.
The vehicle I now have will probably be sold out of my estate inventory.
Eventually if the government figures out that we are all keeping old cars going rather than buying this crummy first generation of EVs (they will get better, these suck) then they'll come for the parts market. They will not be denied.
“...20 year old Toyota Tacomas are over $10k. “
Tell me about it. Been looking for a used Taco or 4Runner here in FL. If you want under 160k miles, 4WD, automatic, with no history in the salt belt, it’s more like $20-27k. Or more. Oh, and no beachmobiles—salt air corrodes engine compartment and many other places.
It’s brutal.
About to pull the trigger on a 4Runner Limited, 2016, 100k miles...for $30k!!! 7 years old. Ugh.
When Cuba is free, those folks are going to get rich becoming mechanics.
” in Cuba they cant get parts so they sort of make their own as I understand it. They run ... barely”
But running “barely” is not what we are talking about here. My 67 Camaro has a 400HP engine and a 4 speed automatic. It weighs 3000 pounds versus some newer Camaros that weigh 3600. And a big difference is yes, you can make or swap out parts on the old cars which is near impossible on the new ones - actually illegal.

Yikes
