Ford is about to break out big EV losses for the first time

DETROIT – Ford Motor is about to tell investors what they’ve long wondered: How much is the transition to electric vehicles costing?

The automaker on Thursday plans to begin reporting its financial results by business unit, instead of by region, ushering in the new reporting structure with a “teach-in” for analysts and media.

Deutsche Bank analyst Emmanuel Rosner believes Ford could be incurring gross losses of about $9,000 per EV sold. The analyst expects Ford to reveal Thursday Model e operating losses of $6 billion for 2022. That’s after accounting for significant research and development investments — roughly 65% of the company’s total R&D — into the EV unit.

“The EV business could report much deeper losses than investors expect, which could make Ford’s target for 8% EV EBIT margin by 2026 particularly difficult to achieve,” Rosner said Monday in an investor note.

Aside from EV leader Tesla, no major automakers are expected to generate meaningful profits from electric vehicles for at least several years, as the industry works to increase EV output and manufacturing scale. That’s particularly true of EVs like Ford’s, as mass-market vehicles typically generate lower profits than luxury models.

Losing $9K/unit. Not to worry, they’ll make it up on volume.

That's a good plan.

Excuse me, General, sir, but may I point out that several U.S. States and most of the European Union decided to adopt targets dates (most frequently 2035) to phase out ICE vehicles first, then every manufacturer decided to go electric.

Ironically those same states are also restricting their ability to produce the necessary electrical power to actually make the transition.

California was setting the ridiculous dates at the same time they were telling EV owners not to charge their cars and trying to phase out a nuke plant.

Basing your future in that clown world is not a good idea.

Lol! Yes, these companies like Ford and GM are idiots. Tesla actually had a plan that works. Tesla's plan was to make luxury sports cars for the rich at a profit, then use that money to build luxury sedans for the rich at a profit, then make cheaper cars for a profit. They stuck to the plan over years, making cars more efficiently and reducing prices all while making huge profits.

A good plan is to increase volume on profitable cars. Ford and GM are losing thousands on each EV they sell, because they refuse to sell them at a price that is more than what it costs them to build.

Losing $9K per unit? No problem. They’ll just make it up on volume.

I suspect that even market leader Tesla will not be here in ten years.

Anything can happen. But Musk has been heard to say that he doesn't want to be selling cars in the near future. His plan is to gravitate to building ride-sharing vehicles and robots. He'll make bigger profits doing that. As well as home appliances such as air conditioners and becoming a utility company. Others will be making the EV's.

It’s actually easier than that

Brandon jacked the cafe standards back up.

EVs are the only way Ford can keep selling the trucks people actually want

Ford and GM are on their way to becoming ZERO stocks, I personally would buy stock in Toyota which isn’t going the EV route of all the major auto makers.

Actually, even Toyota has been suckered into the game. They have a couple EV's for sale. One of my neighbors bought a Toyota BZ4X SUV, all electric. These cost around $50,000 or so.

The FedGov must be putting tremendous pressure on the US automakers to continue to work on EVs despite being a certain market loser. No one in a business that is required to make a profit (ie has stockholders) would continue a product line that is a big money loser.

Here is a disturbing thought: it is possible that FedGov has guaranteed the auto folks that there will be no market for ICE cars in two years because there will be no gas stations any more.

OTOH the auto folks may be throwing some money down the toilet for now to keep FedGov pressure at a minimum while keeping in mind that the commies will probably be gone in two years and business can get back to normal.

A very expensive game of chess going on ...

Ford didn’t take any money out of the last bail out, that’s why I bought one. I was a 100% Chevy man until that bail out, but when it became Government Motors, I said no more.

The push for coal-charged Electric Vehicles are about Communism and virtue signaling.

The virtue whiners have been very quiet lately because they know they're going to be correctly blamed for the exploitation of black children mining cobalt in the Congo.

It turns out that so-called "Green" energy is actually red - blood red.

Ford needs to make a car called the EMP, that has a simple 2 or 4 cylinder engine, normally aspirated carburetor, easy to fix with hand tools, and NO electrical or computer do-dads.

Would sell 30 million of them but quick.

Ford F-150 Lightning recall reveals cause of battery fire

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has revealed the root cause of the battery fires that halted Ford (F) F-150 Lightning production.

Back in early February a battery defect resulted in a fire in an F-150 Lightning that was awaiting final inspection, and the fire spread to two other vehicles. Ford halted production then as battery supplier SK On figured out a solution, with production restarting on March 13th.

Now recall documents released by NHTSA detail exactly what happened in those vehicles, leading to the recall of 18 Ford F-150 Lightnings.

In one of NHTSA’s safety recall reports related to the F-150 battery issue, the report stated a manufacturing defect in the battery cells “may result in an internal short circuit when the high voltage battery is at a high state of charge… which could result in a fire.”

The report went on to detail that the defect was due to “production process deviations at the supplier [where] the cathode aluminum tabs may contact the anode electrode material causing an internal short circuit” when the battery is at a “high state of charge.”

The report stated that Ford was able to replicate the issue, and could trace the defective battery packs down to the exact vehicles that had them installed, leading to the recall of those 18 F-150 Lightnings. Remediation of the issue will require the installation of new battery packs installed free of charge.
