Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced Monday that the company will be laying off another 9,000 employees, marking the second round of significant layoffs this year.
These cuts are in addition to the 18,000 layoffs Jassy announced in January, which had started in November. Jassy said in a memo to employees on Monday that most of the cuts will affect Amazon Web Services, Amazon’s People Experience and Technology Solutions, advertising, and Twitch, which is a video live-streaming service.
“For several years leading up to this one, most of our businesses added a significant amount of headcount,” Jassy wrote in a memo to employees. “This made sense given what was happening in our businesses and the economy as a whole.”
“However, given the uncertain economy in which we reside, and the uncertainty that exists in the near future, we have chosen to be more streamlined in our costs and headcount,” he added.

They just went on a hiring and warehouse building binge since COVID. The thought was that the “Order In” economy was here to stay. I guess nothing lasts forever.

Layoffs in a recession is a good thing. It is the means companies use to cut excess employees and restructure their fixed costs. Usually, layoffs come in at the bottom of a recession.
Amazon remodeled a plaza down the street to build an Amazon Fresh grocery store. Now, I understand it may be on hold after they spent 100’s of thousands rebuilding this structure.
We aren’t ordering as much. We’re tightening our belts due to inflation and the big tax bill we’re likely to have to pay here in April.
How about lower our taxes and do something about inflation? Maybe then you’ll see your orders coming back.
When we pay over a third of our income in taxes ...well, it limits you a bit.
When the union thugs start coming around and buying politicians, people start getting laid off. All of the new commie governors (Michigan, Arizona, etc.) are all trying to outlaw “the right to work state” designation. The union bitches don’t want you working unless they get their cut of your paycheck.

They halted construction on their Amazon 2 headquarters in Arlington VA. I had no doubt 5 years ago when learned they were coming to DC that they would never fully open A2. They expanded too quickly, bought While Foods and ruined it, depended on the Pentagon DOD Cloud management system contract which they lost to Microsoft (Thank you Trump!), and provided crappy service overall. Never trusted their business plan. Good riddance.
