DeSantis slams Manhattan DA in first remarks on potential Trump indictment

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) weighed in Monday on Donald Trump’s possible criminal indictment in New York, breaking a two-day long silence on the former president’s claim that he will be arrested this week.

Asked about the rumored indictment during an event, DeSantis lambasted Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, whose office is investigating hush money paid to a porn star on Trump’s behalf during his 2016 campaign, calling him a “Soros-funded prosecutor” and accusing him of “weaponizing” his office.

“I’ve seen rumors swirl. I have not seen any facts yet, and so I don’t know what’s going to happen,” said DeSantis, a likely 2024 Republican presidential hopeful. “But I do know this: The Manhattan district attorney is a Soros-funded prosecutor and so he, like other Soros-funded prosecutors, they weaponize their office to impose a political agenda on society at the expense of the rule of law and public safety.”

DeSantis didn’t mention Trump by name, choosing instead to grill Bragg over his approach to crime in New York City, though he drew a laugh from the audience when he quipped that he doesn’t “know what goes into paying hush money to a porn star to secure silence over some type of alleged affair.”

“But what I can speak to is if you have a prosecutor, who is ignoring crimes happening every single day in his jurisdiction, and he chooses to go back many, many years ago to try to use something about porn star hush money payments, that’s an example of pursuing a political agenda and weaponizing the office,” he said.

Still, DeSantis also noted that his office would not be involved in the case “in any way,” signaling that he has no plans to help Trump fight extradition to New York should he face charges.

The remarks were DeSantis’s first on the potential indictment since Trump claimed in a Saturday post on his social media site that he would be arrested on Tuesday and urged his supporters to protest any possible criminal charges against him.

DeSantis’s initial silence on the matter kicked off a pressure campaign by Trump’s allies, who raised questions about why the Florida governor hadn’t chimed in on the former president’s claims.

Other current and prospective Republican presidential candidates, including former Vice President Mike Pence and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, came out in defense of Trump over the weekend, casting Bragg’s investigation as politically motivated.

Ramaswamy specifically sought to pressure DeSantis and former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, one of the few declared Republican presidential candidates, to condemn Bragg’s “political persecution through prosecution” of Trump.

You can't win with bigots, and we have a lot of them on FR nowadays. No matter what Ron DeSantis did or didn't do, now and into the future, there will be always be concocted reasons and snide remarks about it -- "he shoulda done this, he shoulda done that, he shoulda said this"... ad absurdum. Prejudice is like that. You know what they say about opinions...

Unhinged doesn’t even begin to describe these clowns. That statement “profess his loyalty” is what every tinpot dictator and their various cults of personality would spew.

Agree. Can you imagine if the roles were reversed? Trump would go nuclear on DeSantis.

Typical responses here..

People bitching about DeSantis’ “silence”, DeSantis comes out and slams the Manhattan DA and people now bitching about his statement. Make up your damn minds..

Surprising that DeSantis, a gifted lawyer and politician, does not know the details of the case that most of us have known for a while.

He failed to mention that a possible misdemeanor which has bypassed the statute of limitations has been turned into a felony by twisting the laws.

Instead, he grabbed the low hanging fruit, ‘Soros, crime, etc’ while repeating the ‘porn star hush money’ liberal narrative. Classy…….not so much.

Dear DeSantis lovers, if you want a fair discussion on Trump/DeSantis, start being honest and compare the two evenly. All that matters is which one will fight for us as a nation regardless of the outcome.

DeSantis playing coy is not fighting for us as a nation. Step up or step down. Stop screwing with the voters.

Sunday, DPEC (Desantis Presidential Election Committee) war room coffee and donuts meeting.

Advisor One: (while pouring himself a cup of Almond Hazelnut). Ron, did you want a strawberry or chocolate donut?

DeSantis: Cut me half of a Bear Claw, have to watch the beltline you know...haha.

Advisor Two: Let’s go over some sample questions. Here’s one.

What’s the answer if you get questioned about Trump indictment?

DeSantis: First off, we don’t know if there’s going to be one.

Advisor Three: Right, might be better to wait and see, and if there is we respond.

Advisor Four: Good idea.

Advisor Five: Any poll data?

Advisor Six: Yeah. 20-1 conservatives really pissed about this. Some democrats too. The Indian guy running for office, thinks you and Haley should respond now.

DeSantis: What’s McConnell, Jeb and Karl saying about this? Can you get them on the phone?

Advisor Seven: McConnell recommends waiting till we sample our base on it. He thinks there a good number who think that the Photo-op of Trump being arrested or at least a mug shot, will be good for us.

Advisor Eight: Jeb Bush suggests you come out and say that you’re all for the rule of law.

Advisor Nine: Karl Rove suggests that you come out and blast Bragg, making sure you say in the remarks that he’s a George Soros guy, and....and this is good....says you should also make a point of saying this...and I quote him

“that you don’t know what goes into paying hush money to a porn star to secure silence over some type of alleged affair.”

DeSantis: (licking the donut glaze from each finger). I like that.

No we want someone with the conviction to stand up for right and wrong, and not wait or his base to be polled or to put his finger in the wind. For any one else what the DA is doing is flat out wrong.

DeSantis is not smart.

So let me get this straight. You want Desantis, who very well might be running for President of the United States against Donald Trump, to immediately defend Trump from an indictment that hasn't even been drawn up yet???

Is that what you want? You want the Governor of Florida to defend a possible campaign opponent BEFORE an indictment has even been filed. Again, you people are absolutely unhinged. Go back and look at Trump's recent statements about Desantis. Ron owes Don absolutely nothing.

I agree. DeSantis doesn’t need to jump when Trump and his supporters say jump. Jeesh. All Trump’s been doing lately is hinting that he has dirt on DeSantis and his wife. Lowlife, juvenile name-calling and personal attacks.

Why should DeSantis rush to Trump’s defense? DeSantis has already been on the receiving end of these kinds of leftist attacks and they’ve mostly been from Trump, doing the work of the Democrats to eliminate DeSantis as a viable candidate. DeSantis is not obligated to do anything to help Trump. He’s not Trump’s toady.

Stay out of the mud, DeSantis. Let Trump try to scrape it off himself. He’s been slinging a lot of it lately.
