Trump rolls out 2024 trade policy that would 'tax China to build up America,' reward US producers

Trump said to achieve his goal, he would phase in a system of universal, baseline tariffs on most foreign products. Trump said higher tariffs will "increase incrementally depending on how much individual foreign countries devalue their currency."

Trump also said countries devalue their currency and "subsidize their industries, or otherwise engage in trade cheating and abuse, and they do it now like never before."

"We had largely stopped and it was going to be stopped completely within less than a year," Trump said, reflecting on his administration.

"As tariffs on foreign producers go up, taxes on American producers will go down, and go down very substantially, that means a lot of jobs coming in," Trump said.

So many great ideas...Where were these ideas back in 2016-2020?

They were there. Why do you think our economy was so much better then?

There were steel tariffs, and Mexico/China raised a ruckus. But I seem to remember there was a national security aspect at the time where they were finding substandard steel in military related areas, and a discussion of China selling through Mexico/Canada to exploit the old trade regime.

“They were there.”

Plus the Democrats controlled both houses of Congress.
That includes the two years the Republicans had a majority in both houses.

A president needs to DEMAND...ORDER...US companies out of china. Do it without announcement. Do it covertly. Remove as much tooling and property as possible. They can even replace it with fake new machinery/upgrades to raise as little suspicion as possible.

But get Apple, and other important companies out by a certain date. Then cut off china as much as possible. Unimportant companies, like clothing companies, cheap plastic crap companies, and other garbage peddlers can eat crap for the short term. Cut them a tax break to re open in America. Hell, go anywhere else in the world EXCEPT china.

Trump tried. But even with the GOP (GOPe) in control of both houses of Congress, he could only get a few things done. If I had to bet, I’d bet that it would be even tougher the next time around.

A key indicator would be if Trump learned from the past, and chose better folks in 2024. But he did endorse that loser Dr. Oz (a sore spot for me), so I’m not holding my breath.

No one was going to beat Fetterman. There are half a million more registered Dems and Fetterman won by about 265,000.

I'd run Dr. Oz again...I think he'd be a great Senator.

Oz wasn’t perfect by any stretch, but he’s a lot better than a lot of other Republicans I see out there.

Oz might have made a great senator. But you’ve got to get elected first. And Oz was just wrong for Pennsylvania. Here’s something I mentioned on another thread (please forgive if you saw it previously):

I have friends in rural western Pennsylvania. It’s solid Trump country, no doubt about it. I was visiting there the summer before the 2022 PA senate election. I was shocked to see that there were as many Fetterman signs in front yards as Oz signs.

Part of that was due to Fetterman’s excellent campaign ads. Part of it was also due to how bad a candidate Oz was (Hollywood carpetbagger). Would there have been as many Fetterman signs out if the GOP candidate wasn’t so bad? I don’t think so.

First you have to tell me who would have been a better candidate than Oz.

Roe vs Wade overturn was a HUGE swing for Fetterman. Wild campaign turnouts...and pink shirts everywhere.

That’s a fair question. I would have preferred Kathy Barnette. Yes, there was a problem with Barnette. She was unpolished and inexperienced. In a way she reminded me of Sarah Palin. The state GOP could have nursed her along. Instead they went with a flashy Hollywood outsider.

Yep. Then we had some GOP senators saying stupid things related to that right before the election. That sure didn’t help.

Kathy was not Senate Material. She was female and black. Is that how we now pick our candidates?...like the Dems??

I liked Kathy Barnette for her Sarah Palin-like qualities.
The black female thing was kind of a bonus. Sort of like how Oz’s supposed name recognition was kind of a bonus.

I’ve thought about this a bit more since my last post. Barnette was my choice. But would she have won? Ah, probably not. Among other things, Fetterman’s ads were just too good. And the steal was just too good.

I don’t understand how Kathy can be compared to Sarah Palin.

I’ve always believed that one of the reasons China released Covid onto the world, was so they could get out of honoring their trade agreement with President Trump. The question now is, if Trump gets back in the White House, what will China do to thwart Trump, and our economy next time around?
