Afire at a Carus plant in LaSalle, Illinois, has temporarily shut down the only US producer of potassium permanganate and sodium permanganate and is raising concern about availability of the important water treatment chemicals.
The Jan. 11 fire destroyed a warehouse and caused extensive damage at the facility, Carus says. The firm declared force majeure on Jan. 18, saying it will be at least 90 days before it can fulfill orders for permanganate chemicals.
The company supplies about 80% of the US market for the chemicals, which are used in municipal water treatment to oxidize dissolved iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide into solids that can be filtered out. The bulk of imported potassium permanganate and sodium permanganate comes from India. China is the world’s largest producer of the chemicals, but companies there are hobbled by a US antidumping tariff on potassium permanganate.
A Jan. 18 bulletin from the US Environmental Protection Agency warns that Carus customers should try to find alternate suppliers. “Water and wastewater systems that receive chemicals that are produced at the Carus facility in LaSalle may experience supply chain disruptions, and the domestic market for these chemicals will likely experience challenges until the lost production capacity is restored,” the notice says.
Indeed, news of the fire sparked a round of anxious calls from municipal authorities and others seeking to secure supply for the months ahead.
“I’m getting an insane amount of calls for an insane amount of volume,” says one distributor who supplies imported permanganate, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of his company’s policy. “I’m getting unsolicited orders for six to eight months.”

Heard this reported by "Southern Prepper 1" today on his Youtube channel. Didn't see any posting of it on FR.
Btw, my municipal water has been tasting and smelling a little funny lately. (Seriously.) How about yours?
Other than that, nothing to see here, just another routine fire that threatens America's infrastructure and Americans' ability to live safe and healthy lives.
At least it wasn't a power station or a chicken farm. Right?
No, mine is mainly out of the Columbia River. Seems fine.
WEF strikes again?
At least people can prepare by getting a berkey filter.
In tenth grade, I read about potassium permanganate being a power oxidizer. When mixed with glycerin, it creates an exothermic reaction that will eventually burst into flames. Our chem lab had both chemicals, so I thought I’d give it a try before class started. I mixed them on a paper towel, but nothing happened. Disappointed, I tossed the paper towel into the metal trash can.
Class started, I forgot about what I had done, and about ten minutes into class there was a fire in the trash can at the back of the room! Whoops! I can’t recall if I fessed up to it. I do know I wasn’t suspended or kicked out of the class.
So I’m not surprised that Potassium Permanganate plants are susceptible to fire.
BTTT
Army/Navy surplus stores have an abundance of Chlorine Tablets...(secret...they never go bad)
Monopoly’s are bad. A monopoly with one facility is even worse.
Petroleum, natural gas, electricity, food, water, Healthcare, anything needed for food, shelter, or transportation, is going to be centrally controlled. You will be rationed and like it.
I’m glad we have a good well. But seriously, boil your drinking water NOW.
When I was a teenager (long ago) I raised pigeons, mostly Birmingham Rollers, some Homers, Fantails, etc. I remember having to add potassium permangemate to their water to treat what we called “canker”. It turned the water red and it did cure their canker. I don’t know if there’s a use for water treatment for humans, but it wouldn’t surprise me.
I wondered if food processing plant ‘fires’ would be followed by disasters in water treatment plants... hope it’s all coincidence.
Except for traces of radiation...
Thanks, Perseverando.
*PING* to the rest of you...
“Except for traces of radiation...”
Yeah, don’t breath, walk on the ground, or look at the sun or you’ll get “traces of radiation”.
Wondering why the cost of chlorine had risen so fast here in Indonesia, I came across several accounts of two of the largest producers of chlorine in the US being put out of action due to large fires at their facilities.
IIRC, this was ~six months ago.
First they came after the churches, then they came after the chicken farms and now it’s the producers of the water treatment chemical plants.
As per agenda 21 after depopulation has reduced numbers the cattle need to be relocated moved from the rural setting into a more controlled urban setting, naturally poisoning the wells will help
