An earthquake of magnitude 4.6 occurred in Romania
Teams were sent from Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, France, Greece, the Netherlands, Poland and Romania to support first responders on the ground, said European Commissioner for crisis management Janesz Lenarcic in a joint statement with the EU’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell.
Italy and Hungary have also offered their rescue teams to Turkey, according to the statement, which described the earthquake as “one of the strongest earthquakes in the region in more than 100 years”.
Italian coverage. Not much new info, but good backgrounder and a lot of pics at the link.
Reading the reports this morning, as bad as this is, I’m stunned it’s not worse.
That quake 100 years ago in Turkey killed over 30,000.
This says “third major jolt”

The third was a 7.6 - a major earthquake in its own right. Praying for those caught in this
Just had another M6.0
Right. I expect tens of thousands dead. The buildings going down as they did...the debris.
I hope they can quickly rescue as many as possible, but I expect the death toll will rise.
Me too. Utter devastation.
Those poor people. at this point I think a semi driving by would take down any remaining buildings with 2 quakes over 7 and several over 6. Hopefully this much violent shaking in one place does not destabilize other areas Not sure that would happen but I don’t remember this many major quakes in one area in so short a period of time
Most buildings still standing.
If most of those are habitable, then not nearly as bad as feared.
Especially if heat, potable water, food, and sewage can be provided/brought back on line quickly.
Damage in Syria bad enough that Syria is requesting help from Israel. Tremors felt in Tel Aviv area.
I fully expect that both the governments of Turkey and Syria will milk this for all they can.

I had heard an interview earlier where Turkey recently has tried to strengthen building codes .
Fwiw, I have been to Turkey several times , although decades ago. Many private residences were “do it yourself”. If Abdul buys or builds a home, expansion efforts to build a in law suite on the 2nd or 3rd floor.
That is the story that our tour guide gave us.
So the result was thousands of half built brick buildings with rebar poking out. No doubt those type structures could not have survived.
