The DeSantis strategy: Ignore an increasingly agitated Trump
The hill ^ | 02/05/2023 | JOE CONCHA

Donald Trump’s presidential campaign is nearly three months old, but already it’s clear whom he sees as his biggest threat with the Iowa caucuses still a year away: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

The perspective comes as Trump continues to act more like an underdog in the race for the Republican nomination. In recent days, the former president has gone after DeSantis, with Trump somehow claiming that Florida “was closed for a long period of time” after the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March 2020.

“They’re trying to rewrite history,” he added of DeSantis in an interview earlier this week.

It’s an odd front for Trump to open given that he praised DeSantis’s re-opening approach three years ago. Not surprisingly, the 45th president also failed to mention that he advocated lockdowns in the spring of 2020.

After all, didn't DeSantis say more than once, that if Trump runs in 2024, he would not run?

Actually, no. He's never said this at all.

he was just sworn in for his second term 4 weeks ago...

3 weeks ago he released a statement instructing people not to donate any money to any organization that claims he’s running for president in 2024...

he has to resign as governor to run for president...

he never announced he’s running for president...

you and several other people have been told all of the above over and over and over...

why is it so difficult for you to understand it???...

Gee, my response apparently flew right over your head.

The response you provided was nothing more than a word salad deflection designed to totally ignore that I had made the contention that DeSantis employed deception. Why did you ignore that?

Is honesty not a virtue you care much about? Or is it your belief that 2020 was a fair & free election that Joe Biden won legitimately?

Not responding at all is not “passive aggressive” in any way

It’s actually the mature thing to do in a situation like this

Add: there is a saying when negotiating -he who speaks first loses-and it’s entirely accurate

Ah, our perpetual squabble.

I do like much about Donald Trump. He did good things as Pres, and survived some truly unfair political attacks.

That said, Trump lacks a certain wisdom, the kind demonstrated by Reagan and DeSantis and Pompeo.

Trump is spoiling for an argument with DeSantis. That's pretty much his style. It's not presidential, it's not diplomatic, and it's rarely effective in either debate or negotiation. He chooses to reinforce a negative caricature of himself. Wise opponents will largely ignore him until a proper debate forum.

The Hill is picking sides, but I do suspect that they are correct in their polling and that Trump would not beat Biden (or any Dem opponent). I see this in my daily discussions among Conservative friends and rels. I have yet to meet one Conservative previous Trump voter who wants him to run. I'm sure to meet one or more of course, but not so far out of over a dozen friends.

Trump is great at royally assuming credit, and somehow figures that his endorsement won DeSantis' re-election. Hmm, as a comparison, Trump endorsed Lt. Gov. Janice McGeachin who opposed incumbent GOPer Little's re-election bid here is the Great State of Idaho. Little prevailed handily in both the GOP primary and then the general. Keeping in mind that Trump won in Idaho in 16 and 20, his impact on OUR Gov election was negligible.

I never develop a "bromance" with any candidate. I favor DeSantis at the moment, but I'm also looking at Pompeo, and I'll read his book. I'll vote (early, of course) for whichever GOP candidate secured the GOP nod, and I'll support that nominee with friends, rels, and (except for Trump) a donation.

I do believe that some here should understand that it's highly unlikely that Trump will get the nom. Some of it is optics (lower info voters prefer a youthful and attractive candidate) and much of it will be the dozens of Trump quotes that the Dems will play over and over.

My hope is that Trump finds it within himself to be a team player if/when he loses the nom.

What is a lawyer doing with that weapon?

Watch out. War vet here. I’m married to it. Surrounded by it. That doesn’t convince me

That’s not correct in this case. Trump is stating exactly what DeSantis did to him and is hinting at what DeSantis would do to anyone. I for one want DeSantis to state whether or not he is running

DeSantis is not not-responding He’s governor of a big state. A swing state. Florida. And Trump helped him get there

It’s saying without saying why he doesn’t support trump

Everyone knows that

I want him to quit shirking his responsibility quit acting like the bushes.

desantis ran for reelection for florida governor last year (2022)...

his opponent was “globalist” charlie crist...

desantis needed big money donors to combat and win against big money backed “globalist” charlie crist...

trump’s “operation warped speech” against desantis insinuates floridians made a bad choice and should’ve voted for the “globalist” charlie crist...

Trump wants DeSantis’s endorsement. DeSantis says no pretending that in his position he gets to play Bush polite

Many people throw tomatoes at Trump over it but not I

I want DeSantis to quit playing coy like a popular junior high school prick and realize he is governor and owes Trump consideration for his endorsement,

He must come out and say why he wont endorse Trump or endorse him

To not do so is nasty, snidely and the exact opposite of gentlemanly

Either the guys on this forum have neglected fair play rules or TDS has made them wacko or they’re plants

That’s how I see it. Just my view.

desantis doesn’t owe trump anything...

especially after trump’s “operation warped speech”...

trump pissed off a lot of his supporters in my area of florida...

he started it with “desanctimonious” a few months ago...

this past week was the final nails in his political coffin with the other childish attacks...

One pushes the jab The other is making sure no one is forced to take it.

One signs all sorts of spending bills The other is controlling spending

One supports swamp creatures The other has remained quiet

Careful who you call the Rino. Trump fits the bill better than desantis.

BOOM! I agree wholeheartedly!

Right now no republican will win the White House because the dems are playing the winning ballot game and the pubs are the pubs are playing the losing vote game. Nothing was learned in 2020 or 2022 about how the dems play the election game. So it doesn’t matter who the pubs put up. The dems could put up a gerbil and still win. They proved that in 2020 and 2022.
